Different levers?

Just came across this photo that shows Armstrong using a different brake lever for right and left. I've seen others too.

Any ideas of why this is?

the left one isn't sti because he used a dt lever to change the front changer to save weight.or so i was told

Thats the Time trial up alp duez, so its a weight saving thing like what piedwagtail said. The overshoes and skinsuit give it away

That's a Dura Ace 7400 series left brake lever... anorak.....me has those !!

I assume the bikes then weren't at the weight limit...
