Hi

I'm planning a family adventure for next summer to cycle from Dieppe to Paris and am looking for any knowledge on suitable routes that are either off road or on very low traffic roads. There will be 4 adults along with 2 x 6 year olds and 2 x 8 year olds so we won't be going too far each day so the time/distance doesn't matter. The important things is that the kids get to cycle safely.

We are planning to follow the Avenue Verte out of Dieppe for the first 40km however after that the route becomes varied so I would welcome any advice. I've found another off road route around Gisors for ~30km so was planning to incorporate that.

We are not that fussed about finishing in Paris itself as I think it will be very busy for the kids to cycle in however we would like to get reasonably close

Any advice welcome - thanks

Somewhere on here there is a report of someone who rode to Paris with his children (though I don't remember where he started from) - it sounded great (probably a year or two back but I'm hopeless at using the site search engine successfully  ).

Thanks everyone - looks a good report. Eurodisney is always an option - it might help motivate the kids!

Hi pigmy

Wow, that brings back memories - seems so long ago but less than 11 months since we did our first big trip.

Our route used Avenue Verte to begin ( which is fabulous) and then very minor roads from there to the outskirts of Paris.

We did go through some (very) small towns and pass within a couple of miles of CDG airport - but you hardly knew it.

Most people seem to go to the West of Paris but being contrary I chose the East as the route went through Chantilly and entered Paris along a 20+ mile section of superb canal towpath - right into the heart of the city.

Paris itself was a revelation - having only cycled in local towns and cities in the UK before we were amazed at how good the cycle lanes are.

We arranged the trip to arrive in Paris on a Sunday as the traffic is so light compared with weekdays.

Our cycling knowledge is woefully inadequate and Georgia and Jack's bikes were rubbish - cheap and heavy mountain bikes.

Thankfully we had no issues and everything went swimmingly.

I received tons of info. and help from people on here which was invaluable.

We enjoyed it so much we are going to do the Dieppe - Paris bit again this year.

For any more specific info. please feel free to get in touch.

I cycled through Paris on a Sunday evening two years ago just as it was getting busy. Yes, it was very busy and I wouldn't want to do it with kids but even in the centre of the capital I was amazed at how accommodating of cyclists the other road users were.

I suggest not cycling up the cobbles towards the Arc de Triomphe unless you have a MTB with good suspension! On a roadie it hurts!! Bon chance.
