I dont understand why anyone would care tbh. I have no idea what my g-g-grandparents did and I have no influence, so I cant feel guilty about it - is this just the start of a scam to try and get ancestors to pay the modern offspring (who also shouldnt care) for their historic hurt?

My ancestors fled Germany to escape persecution, can someone set up a website so I can trace their house and be compensated by the current owners?

Hey - just noticed you're from Kilnhurst - about 2 minutes from my parents!

The sad reality of the consumer world today is that I likely would not own anything if children on slave labour was not making some part of it for me in India or Asia :sad:I don't feel that I'm in a position to judge ..... forget the past, let it go.....trying to address exploitation in the world today would be a be a far better idea imho

I'm not cynical enough to believe that this is a stage towards compensation etc. I just feel it is of great historical interest. These papers have just been opened up to search from the public, and they represent one of the first examples of beurocratic process. They also show the extent to which slave ownership was embedded into the then society. Lots of clergymen involved as well as army officers around the country.

Slaves were property back then, as were women and this was 'normal' for the time. When Britain abolished slavery the government compensated slave owners for their loss, which is not normal. Of course many in the government were slave owners so it is easy to see how this idea got off the ground. The fortunes made by this sleight of hand set certain people and their progeny up for life lasting until today and since compensation for the victims has been mentioned I am still waiting for mine.

No. My paternal grandfather's lot weren't smart enough to get in to the parish graveyard, and my maternal grandfather's lot were kicked out of Portugal for being Jewish. Both grandmothers grew up in poverty, one in Kiel and the other in East London.
