I am a newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetic,

Just wondering if anyone else here is and if cycling has helped them?

Exercise will absolutely help, it will help burn off the excess sugar that you have and thats what causes the symptoms. I'm no Doctor I'm only a Paramedic but I know of guys who were type 2 and now eat whatever they want. I think a big difference is when you have exercise goals you start to eat better to help achieve them, plan for an event (i.e. sportive) and achieve it. I'm sure you have achieved loads of great things in your life, just make this another one. Also have read of this: http://theamazing39stonecyclist.wordpress.com/about/ if this is what he has achieved imagine what you could do.

Hi ya yep I am Diabetic type 2 diagnosed about 10 yrs ago

at christmas my weight was up to 18 stone at my check up my blood sugar levels were high, as was my colesterol levels

I have changed my diet I eat light philadelphia on Ryvita at work a couple of bananas and a couple of pears then a evening meal of boiled potatoes, green veg and a tin of beef stew and dumplings.

this combined with cycling now at 100 miles a week and building, I started at 20miles a week

My weight is down to 15.8 and my last test came back good well under the limits and with the extra work I am looking forward to my next blood tests

If its not to personal question what readings did you get from your blood tests ?

theres not to much to worry about this is not the end of life,Just makes you more aware of what you eat and drink

I was suspicious so had a finger prick test at lloyds chemist reading was 14 then did a fasting test at the doctors the next day reading was 11 so it went up while I was asleep because (I brought a kit) I tested it before going to sleep and it was 8.( I ate nothing in-between).

Im on Metformin at the moment watching my diet carefully ive gone down in weight from 17.7 to 15.12 in a month, cycling every other day or more if I can.

Ah...a subject close to my heart...

I was diagnosed T2 on 15th November 2009 during complications from an operation. Long story short, I used it to my advantage and saw it as a kick up the arse (as you seem to have done also). Back onto the bike and back into all the sports I enjoy. Fast forward to this year and I'm collared by the DSN at my GP's practise and have a health check. All my readings are great and I am displaying none of the symptoms of Diabetes.

Not sure how coherant the above is, but I did blog on my experiences for a while, take a look at sugarlesschronicles.blogspot.com if you fancy.

The main blood test I have to do are an 3 month average one how they can take blood and work out you average for the last 3 months is beyond me

But it sounds like you are doing a cracking job with the weight loss keep it up and you will have no problems
