ok so i'm fixing a rear wheel puncture on my mtb commuter, and my hand knocks the rear derailleur off ...

oh no i'm thinking straight away, i need this for the morning and its 10 o clock on a sunday night,

on closer inspection the hanger bolt appears to have sheared off, so i have slotted it into its dropout and tightened the back wheel right up with the quick release, so allthough its locked in and under pressure from the wheel its not bolted down...

i dont know if anyone has done this before, but i feel the hanger must have been like this for a while, so i'm still using the bike in the morning...

Is there a bolt you can buy for this little job ?

specialized hardrock sport 2005 model.

Just the same as User3143 said most good LBS will have them. But I do know some people that don't use them it's just a pain when you need the back wheel out.

Just the bolt not the hanger? If so, no major problem ruunning it locked by the rear quick release clamp for a bit. You need to extract the bolt shank - you may need a stud removal tool - and get a replacement. A good LBS should have what you need (and the tool if you haven't got one) in stock.

You cna also get new hangers very easily. if the bolt has sheared there's a chance the hanger is bent in any case, and a bent hanger means poor shifting.

Mr. Pig, no it's a shimano acera derailleur, and a big thankyou for all the answers, i think this one is for the bike shop to deal with, another thing as well, my bike needs an overhaul, probably new chain and sprocket, i have a new derailleur allready, but the pedals need replacing bearings have gone one side, the other will follow soon... the crankset is not looking too good and it will need a full cable service and new brake pads etc etc...

i have done about 9000 miles on this bike since 2005 and i need to start spending money on it... i reckon that amounts to roughly £100 ish in the LBS or do i pay £250 for a brand new bike and sell this one on ebay ?

I am quite attached to this one now though...

Knocked mine off on holiday in Jordan (the country not the model) on the first day. No spare and no chance of getting one, so spent the rest of the week and around 200 miles with it held on with the back wheel only. Basically what I'm saying is that you will probably be OK until you can get the replacement/repair done.

prettry sure I have seen hanger bolts that are undercut (make them weaker) so they shear off eaiser in an accident thus preventing damage to the frame - idea being it is cheaper to replace the bolt thant the frame.
