Wow,

Just been sent an email offering me the chance to do the Deloiite RAB for only £750, and only have to raise just under £3k in sponsorship to qualify!

May just give that a miss

I drove past a wave of them a couple of years back one evening going home from work (near Belmont in Lancashire) and looked up the name in anticipation. When I read the entry fee and the sponsorship requirement it got instantly shelved. Nice idea, would love to do it - but not for that price!

Or you could do it without the sponsorship for just £1,750.
That's about double what it cost me to ride an end to end. But then I wasn't getting any support and from those I know who've done the Delottie RAB you do get a lot of support. It's not my sort of thing, I'd rather pick my own route and stop in more interesting places, but each to their own.

To be fair, unless you do an unsupported camping trip, any LEJoG is going to cost a bit of money. But what I don't like about Deloitte Ride Across Britain is that they had a massive food poisoning.outbreak and tried to cover it up!

£1750 is expensive but I would consider it, but £750 and then £3k sponsorship is taking the piss

That is true on the first running in 2010 ... I have a friend who was infected and had to withdraw from the event, he said the first aid tents were like a scene from M*A*S*H ! - BUT be fair - this year the ride is using fixed accommodation (I think it's university halls?) with proper facilities.

The cost v sponsorship thing has been much debated ... the target market appears to be largely (and I know about 25 people who have ridden it that fit this cachet) time-poor, cash-rich. Prepared to pay a (hefty) premium for total soup-to-nuts organisation.

Have to say the planning and organising was a satisfying part of the two unsupported E2Es I've ridden.

The website seems to talk about, and picture, tents rather than university halls. However, there is no reason why camping = food poisoning as long as there are decent hygiene procedures in place.

LEL, of course, is a similar distance, does use schools and other sites with proper kitchen facilities, and costs about 1/7th of the price (although now fully booked up). I saw somewhere that the orgs estimated that if it wasn't an amateur, volunteer-run event, they might have to charge something like £500-700 to cover costs (but you, Rob, will know more about that than most of us!)

Seems I'm mistaken on the camping - I'm sure I read somewhere that they were going to use University halls?? (and run it in September ... perhaps that was 2012 - when I think it was run in September?)
