Hello all

Am 41 and started cycling for the first time a year ago.

Been loving my communte into work (5 miles each way in london) and a weekend ride, usually on Sat morning of an average of about 35 miles.

Sadly, I think I'm now suffering from piles from the first time.
The pain started on Saturday morning and I took the plunge and went to see my doctor last night.
He rather ambarrassingly inspected by backside and probed for a bit. Is very painful.

He thinks it may be a mild case of piles. If it is a mild case, I would hate to experience severe piles.....!

So am looking for some advice from you guys. I know there is another thread on this subject, but wanted to start another. Sorry for the repetition.

Is causing me a lot of anguish. I know there are worse things to happen to you, but have loved my cycling and hopefully there is a solution to this problem. On conducting some research on the net, it seems this could becoming an ongoing saga for me.

The doctor has given me some Lidocaine to smear on the entrance to my back passage.
Have used that liberally today, and I sense there is a marginal improvement (hope this is not wishful thinking).
This pain as suddenly come on; my saddle has been treating me very well this past year. Has not been a gradual increase in discomfort.

Any one got any advice?

Thanks for your time.

Had some done at Harrogate Hospital a few years ago .Don't get yourself worked up .Little bit of info .They do look inside you .Not painful for me, with a brill sense of humour not even embarrasing .It's their job .They have seen it all .Mine were so large he asked if some other staff could look .

Treatment -some form of gun and rubber bands .I kid you not.I told him being a postie i could have brought my own rubber bands .Strangles them .Then they fall away, no idea how long that took .But they had gone in no time .
Good luck .

Great, thanks for the comments.

To be honest, I can handle any embarrassment; I just don't want the issue to become an ongoing one for me.

Will return to the doc on Friday if no improvement.

Thanks again.

I had a mild case of piles a few years ago. First ever time I had suffered with them and I would have been aged late 30's at the time. Doctor gave me some cream which very quickly sorted them, and suggested that I also increase the amount of fluid that I drink each day. The problem very soon went away, and only very occasionally troubles me now, and if so a few applications of over the counter pile cream will deal with it.

Best of luck with getting it sorted!

+1 for the Vaseline. (And baby wipes!)

I'm not sure that cycling has caused piles. If that is what you think. I started with mine when i was into rock-climbing, aged 25ish at the time, and it's just got worse with age (43 now).

+1 for drinking enough water too.

I know i dont/haven't. As there is always coffee available at work I tend to get a cup of that when thirsty. - Things are going to change now though.

If I was you I wouldn't read too much on the internet about any ailments you might be suffering. Very often it's all worst case scenario. A lot of people suffer/have suffered from piles and they clear up - boring but true.

Good luck with your Rockfords!

Anusol suppositories

once you get over the ring tightening response the first time you try to shove something up your back passage, i can recommend these.

the cream with its long thin applicator is win, I find a suppository to be too much stuff and it leaks and makes mess. The applicator means you can apply it little and often

I've had 'em (pop out) a couple of times, last year (just before a music festival - great timing !) and about 7 years ago.
More uncomfortable than painful, tho' last time they became more sore from wiping at each loo visit.

I actually eat quite a bit of fibre and drink a lot of liquid (ok, tea), not sure exactly what set 'em off in each case.

Anusol+ pushing the damn things back in and they eventually settled down, took several weeks tho', so you may need to be a little patient.

BTW - there's a new technique for sorting them - ultrasound's used to determine the supply to each vein in turn and they're tied off - less invasive and uses a local anaesthetic:
