Got a Deda quill stem adapter, went to put my new Deda Zero 1 handlebar stem on, too big!
The clamp is too big, I'm confused. Should fit surely?

If you have bought this it is for 1" ahead stem while most including the Zero 1 are 1 1/8". As the advert says a shim costing a couple of quids should fix it.

Got my shim, now another problem! Instructions with shim informs me that I must use a 1-1/8" Top cap.
Borrowed a mates 1-1/8" Top cap but it doesn't fit into my 1" stem.
Top caps I have looked at don"t give much info.
Would a washer do?

I am having difficulties understanding what you are saying.

This might help explain what is needed. This includes a useful warning about adapter/extender insertion depth.

If that is not it perhaps photos will help.

My Deda stem is 1'', got a shim to make it 1-1/8".
to allow me to fit my Deda stem.
Instructions with shim tell me to fit 1-1/8" Top cap.
Tried a 1-1/8" Top cap but the insert part is to wide to fit into stem, Being 1" dia.
I need a 1-1/8" Top cap with a 1" insert, I presume.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry Basil I now see what you are talking about, and remembering you are talking about a quill stem adapter, compressing the headset by cap bolt is not relevant, and the 1" insert you just mentioned won't be needed at all.

Doesn't the adapter comes with its own top cap and cap bolt as shown here? It must or else it would be impossible to fix the adapter onto the steerer.

I would have thought the first step is to let the shim and stem sit loosely on the top part of the adapter.

Then the "cap bolt" that comes with the adatper, which is essentially the traditional quill stem bolt, has to be tightened to bind the adapter to the steerer.

Finally the ahead stem binder bolts have to be tightened to fix the stem and shim onto the adapter.

Sorry to be a nuisance! I will use the Cap that came with the adapter.
Should have got a 1" - 1-1/8" adapter in the first place!
Just started cycling again, bikes have changed quite a bit since the late 70's.
Thanks for clearing up my problem.
