As per my previous thread(s) I am looking for a serious hybrid but one that leans towards paths/forrest trails/Penine Way etc.......I do'nt want a MTB.
Decathlon open a new store in Warrington next week and it's possible they will have some offers (I've not read anything to that effect re' cycles). However I have a couple of questions.........

1) Who makes their cycles i.e. are they just another Halfords?**
2) I have looked on the web site and can only find what they call either Freeride/Road/MTB or City.....nothing like what I would call serious hybrid.......am I mising something?
** The Road bikes seem to have good spec's for the prices.

I think Decathlon are a level up from Halfords in the customer care stakes. Halfords sell some good bikes but their aftersales tends to let them down.

Decathlon bikes are certainly good value but don't have the name of some similar specced bikes although the perception of them is on the up.

I don't think the term Hybrid is a helpful one. You can get a flat bar road bike from decathlon, a rigid mountain bike and a touring bike, all of which would be described by some as a hybrid as they are not an out and out road or mtb. Best bet is to get down to the shop and see what they advise you for the type of riding you have in mind.

Thanks for that-the link was useful.
My LBS has explained that very few so called hybrids are any good for e.g. forrest trails-they are OK for road/canal paths etc. One of the exeptions is the Whyte Malvern which I like but am exploring all options before I 'pull the trigger' and part with the cash.

I have their Rockrider 5.2 hardtail. It's the older model than the one on their site. The frame is the same as their 8 series and is light, with Schwalbe City Jets it's a great all-rounder. I have cycled on towpaths and bridleways without issue, it's also no slouch on the road. Frame is made in Portugal, wheels are Rigida Sphinx eyelet rims, SRAM cassette and chain with Altus groupset. Customer service was top notch. The 8.1 is a very good spec for £499 http://www.decathlon.co.uk/81-2011-id_8168695.html The only other option if you really don't want an MTB try the Planet-X Dirty Disco
Decathlon are great. I've bought a number of bikes from them in the past, and they're pretty unbeatable in terms of value for money. You're not at risk of buying a lemon as you would be at Halfords.
wot User says. have four bikes from them and they are superb. i might even have had a fith kids bike for the youngest but not sure.

I got a top specced MTB for under 500 notes . stunning service and after sales. I had a gritty cassette/bearing , possibly my fault not sure , took the bike in they didn't have a rear wheel the same so upgraded me.

no problems with brake levers wrong either . I would buy another bike from them tomorrow if i had the funds

I have a Decathlon hybrid and I absolultely love it. I think their stuff is fantastic quality and ridiculously cheap, at times. Excellent value - for all sports. I love Decathlon. I wish I worked there so I could touch their stuff all day. Seriously.

a great shop. The Kid's Vitamin single speed cost £70 and it is an absolutely stonking good bike.

Sometimes you get what you pay for - I bought a pair of shorts for £18 and they stretch badly. Sometimes you get a real bargain - I bought bar bags for about a tenner each, and they were fine. Sometimes the stuff is a bit out of date - I've seen lights with halogen bulbs rather than LEDS.

The website is not always up to date - you have to go to the store

If it's like the one at Surrey Quays it will have great coffee and croissant for £2 and good toilets - something you won't see at Halfords

I have two decathlon bikes, a sports hybrid and a mountain bike, both of which are great. My kids also have good bikes from there, which we use every day to school. The bikes arrive with the brakes inverted, but they correct thembefore selling. The service is good, and generally, the workshop teamseem to know what they are doing.

Great value for money, good bikes for less that other brands. Given the choice in the merseyside area, i's go there every time. Are they open yet?

Slightly off thread - but ..... Yes, Decathlon are great, visit the stores whenever I can, BUT when are they going to open one in the South West??? They keep opening ones 'up north' - Preston, Edinburgh and ? recently/soon, but what about all the people who live in the west and Wales? And their website is terrible ....
