Sorry to learn of this death

&, also that it statistically equates to one cyclist per month having come to an unfortunate and premature end, on the capitals roads so far this year (2014).

& that that statistic, shall be a further addition to the one million plus people, that shall come to an unfortunate and premature end, following a traffic accident (not a mere collision) on the roads worldwide each year.

That statistic been an unfortunate consequence of increased aspirational car ownership.

Elephant & Castle gyratory "fine" for cyclists, says Boris Johnson

In the past two and a half years, almost 300 people have been injured on the roads in and around the Elephant & Castle. Since Christmas 2011, four pedestrians have died including most recently five year-old Hichame Bouadimi.

The photos suggest that this happened on the smaller roundabout to the south of the main Elephant and Castle roundabout, both a pretty crappy junctions.

I agree, just because your light was green don't mean theirs was red, the lights could have been faultly.

Yes I agree - has always seemed by far the safer one to me - it's quite closely controlled by lights - in fact it isn't really a fully fledged roundabout.

I think people are too focused on being right than doing right. Regardless of what colour that light was, I had already crossed and there was a grown woman with a child following me - even if you believed you were on a green light, wouldn't basic decency force you to stop?

However, it was a red light and by the time that idiot was berating the woman, the light was going from red to green.

From the woman and child's perspective, the green man was lit, there was someone crossing in front of them already and the traffic was moving slowly - why wouldn't they start to cross?

The minor concession I could give to the motorists is that the lighting system in that area is awful, I think the whole section needs to be a box junction because frequently motorists find themselves queuing to get out of the junction on a red light then blocking other traffic coming the other way - and often blocking the crossings so pedestrians are unable to cross when they're permitted to.

I live just down the road and I would never consider cycling round E&C roundabout, driving round it is bad enough. I always take side roads, might take a few minutes more but it avoids that mess.

What's made this area even worse was when they removed the barriers in the middle of the road a few years ago. Now, you have pedestrians streaming through heavy, moving traffic so you have that additional obstacle to navigate. The worst thing I saw was a man with a little kid on his shoulders stood in front of a bus in one lane while another bus sailed past in the next lane.

The driver always seems to get the blame when a ped or cyclist gets hit but the way people act I'm just surprised there aren't more accidents here...

I use it a lot and while I'll admit that you have to keep your wits about you I've never found it a great problem and the drivers generally seem to pay attention.

So while I've always found it less alarming than it looks at first sight maybe I've been lucky and I take your point.

In future I'll be more inclined to avoid it and take the side road diversions - the one to the east is not too bad at all - probably adds very little in time.

Be careful out there.

RIP the victim in this case, and condolences to his friends and family

That's really very unfair if the car drove into the ped or cyclist all by itself
