An open plea to Phil and Paul: it's time to put a f******n sock in it. We know poor Bradley Wiggins crashed and had to withdraw from the Tour, and we know it's a crying shame, a horrible blow to UK cycling and Team Sky in particular, and a tragedy for Wiggins who I daresay had the best form of his career coming into this Tour, blah blah blah, but NOW IS THE TIME to STOP mentioning it every 10 minutes or every time there's not much else in the peloton to comment upon. Please?

You'll need to dip deep into the suitcase of courage to master this, and I know from comments made that you check online forums etc, so for pity sake, move on. There's an entire bike race happening within it's own little bubble for you to focus on, so the constant repetition and 'what might have been' is of no consequence whatsoever. It's not even good style.

Poor Bradley, who was dealt such a cruel blow, whose fleece was more golden than even the golden fleece of the Argonaut Voeckler, whose courage in the face of adversity, and shrubbery, was the stuff of legends, whose lack of weight was much considered in view of the looming appointment with the high mountains, is, to put it bluntly, not there. He's gone home. He did so some days ago and thus plays no further part in 'the grand boucle'; and your nagging is more in the manner of two slightly manky hyena chewing the last sinews from a thigh bone than commentary to be celebrated. By all means occasionally mention that poor Bradley Wiggins, the man upon whom Team Sky placed their hopes, nay their expectations, their sacred trust, was forced out of the Tour some time ago... you have a duty to your public to inform them of that fact, and fact it remains.

Yours lovingly,

RC

I wish I could get the TV coverage and comentary here in Vietnam Rusty, so that for me hearing them repeating about Wiggins may not be so irritating. However I see where you are coming from and have to agree but in defense of ALL commentators of cycling there are long periods when there is not so much to talk about on the actual race and they have to fill time with something.

I feel your pain.

But I guess it's understandable from the national broadcaster's perspective; to favour the 'home' nation. For me it's not wall-to-wall Brad but constant mention of French riders. To the point where I almost don't want there to be a French rider that takes a jersey or wins a stage! Because thereafter, nobody else exists.

So for those folk that think I'm anti-Tommy V, I'm not!! Not at all. He comes across in interviews as very personable, level-headed and realistic. I like him. BUT I don't need to see yet another interview with him, or a feature on him at home with the dog etc etc etc. What I DO want is to see is how other riders are doing.

But, as Keith alludes to, at least I am getting coverage. Got to be thankful for that.

I'd like to ask Phil if his pronunciations of Voickler and Boissen-Hagen are correct. Neither has an 'i' in their surname but you wouldn't think that by listening to Phil.

They are not that bad at all.

Compare to the BBC on the Olympics/Wimbledon.

Listen to the commentary yesterdays highlighs-not over the top mention of Thomas.

They are a good pair of commentators with their heads on the ground.

It was a most excellent rant. However, I haven't noticed them because the coverage I watch has Sean Kelly, who is ace and has the driest sense of humour in the world.

As a Frenchman, it irritates me when Phil keeps getting the colours of the French national flag wrong.
It is not red/white and blue but BLUE/WHITE AND RED, as the blue band is next to the pole.
So if you read this Phil, please take notice next time.

Blue to the mast, blood to the last, as grandmere used to translate.
I've given up on P&P, Paul seems a good bit out of touch and Phil has a bit of trouble with English...
Eurosport is more expert (Sean), fluent (David and Carlton), and entertaining. Plenty of chat in teh quiet periods, and as has been said, SK's great, knows his stuff and MAJORLY dry!

before i really got into cycling, i used to enjoy the phil and paul show. however, now i know a bit more about racing and cycling in general, i prefer eurosport, which seems to pitch its commentary at the knowledgable amateur clubman, rather than at a general audience. p & p have a broader remit, so don't delve into the detail as much as harmon and kelly, although they probably could if they wanted. fwiw i prefer the itv highlights show when i've missed the race live.

at least the awful david duffield is no longer at the mike… kelly is class though, and there are few anglophonic riders that have had the career he's had.

cant get Eurosport as I only have freeview.
Phil irritates me sometimes as he is proned to making mistakes but overall, seeing the race live is great as I have been waiting many years for that to happen on British TV.
A few years ago it started with just 30 minutes highlights, so that now we can see it live, i am happy, regardless of who is commentating.
Beside, Paul is very good at commentating on the tourists sights of the TDF, which I enjoy too.
