i want to re-build a bike that currently has old daytona shifters , new daytona rear deraillieur , so i'm looking to put a new chain set on ,
i can get a centeur chain set , the new 2011 one alloy the same price as a daytona , i have to change the bottom bracket any way ,
question is if a go the centeur route will it be better to change the whole group set to centeur shifters etc or re-build in daytona ? as i want idealy to keep to one type of group ,
a, will the centeur be much better than the daytona or about the same ?
B, should i just mix the whole lot up and not worry ie daytona and centeur ?
c, are the centeur ergo shifters much better than the old daytona ones are about the same ?
thanks in advance

Do you have Daytona 10spd shifters?

yes they are old ones though , i quite like the look of the daytona , but i dont know how much better shifting the centeur would give me if any , or if these daytona ones are worn , as i had trouble adjusting the front derailliuer as well ,

Basically Centaur and Daytona are the same - they had to change the name to the former.

Have a check on the front mech to see if it is a QS (Quick shift, introduced around 2005?) - this might be causing you problems although I use a QS front mech with old shifters and have no problems.

If you need to replace the shifters with a new pair then buying Centaur is a minefield as there are good years with crisp changing and other years with sluggish changing. I'd go for a better pair if you can afford it.

ok , thanks , so i could go daytona chain set then realy , keep it the same as the rear derialieur and shifters ,
i have to change the bottom bracket any way , is their any advantage to moveing up to a centaur high torque chain set and new bottom bracket to match or is the old square taper for the daytona nearly as good ?

The external bearings are a lot better as regards performance than the old square taper BB's but beware

a) Campy introduced a Power Torque system on Centaur cranks which needs special tools to take apart - I'd avoid this and look for a pair of the older Ultra Torque cranks which are just bolted together.

b) The bearings on Ultra Torque last for a season or two and then need to be replaced (£30 inc labour).
