Me and Mrs Johnsie are off to a party in October and have a day (Sunday) to ride in Rutland and nearby. I've done Rutland Water - any other ideas chaps for a 30 - 40 mile jaunt (hills not required!) preferably with a good lunchtime pub?

Incidentally - one year on the forums today.

If you end up doing the reservoir again then lunch at The Finch's Arms on the peninsular.

Ah, I know the Finch's - I must confess to belonging to a fancy dress drinking club (aka morris dancing) and remember the Finch's - superb view across the reservoir. Current thinking is to stay in Bourne and cycle to the Water and back, so that will make a good halfway point.

Cheers

They were very unwelcoming when we arrived one day in wet conditions. Only when pressed they offered to make up a table in the conservatory which, by this time, we declined. There was a pub on the south west corner of the loop which were very good.

Party over and up bright and early yesterday.

Decided to drive to Great Casterton and complete a circuit from there - mostly on road.

Visited Exton, Oakham, Hambleton, Edith Weston and Ketton - 31 miles in total. Great weather and good riding.

Stopped at Anglia Water Normanton for excellent fruit scone and butter.

Didn't fancy Finches - far too posh - and they've built a house in the beer garden that totally obscures the view!

The only part of the Rutland waterside circuit proper we covered was from Egleton to Manton, but the path there has been diverted for some sort of development work and was far too loose and rough to risk much more with our skinny road wheels.

Thoroughly recommended countryside though.
