I've replaced the cable inners, outers & ferrules to both my front & rear mechs The front however just does not seem to want to play properly. The cable seems to have a really high ammount of tension in it to get it to work, I can't turn the barrel adjuster at all because of this. To get the chain onto the outer ring you have to play with the gears on the back (had to do this prior to cable replacement as well) as well as having to change down to the smallest ring in order to change to the outer ring (won't change from middle to outer). Any ideas anyone ?????

Is the outer limit screw on the front mech adjusted properly?

I guess other things to check when the cable is not clamped to the front mech, are a) does the cable run easily within the outer, b) can the shifter pull the cable easily when some cable tension is maintained by hand, and c) whether the front mech can traverse smoothly (albeit sprung) between the rings' positions.

You won't fix it by asking for suggestions as we can't see it.

It's most likey not mounted straight so the cable pull arc is getting resistance and I would hazard a guess the chain is too short as well.

Take it off, set up and re-cable the thing form scratch, if it's still wrong after that take it to a bike shop as it's beyond your skill level.

The front mech 'should' be the easiest to setup once the cables have been changed...huh, should
Did you have problems before you changed cables ?
If not, i wouldnt be changing position on the adjustment screws. If it was ok before, no reason to start adjusting them yet.

Take the cable off and try to manipulate the mech by hand. Does it move freely ? If not, try lubing the pivot. You're probably better off with the chain off to do that.

If it does move freely, check your cable routing. make sure its not pinched or crossed over anywhere, make sure you've routed it through the right guide under the BB (assuming it's routed that way anyway)

If you can, with the cable still disconnected at the mech end, grip the inner cable and operate the shifter. Is the cable moving freely in the outer or through the guides etc.

Have you connected the cable to the right part of the clamp on the mech, or the right side of the clamp ? Ive been caught like that before. I can't quite visualise what happened on mine, but it wasnt routed properly.

Edited to say...i see RAFN has suggested most of that
