Dawes Galaxy 2009 Frame size

Hi just brought a Dawes Galaxy 2009 off ebay, the bike looks in good condition. A bit late now but my main worry is the frame size its a 22inch. I am currently riding an older galaxy (1989) which is a 21" top of seat tube to centre of crank. does one inch make much diffrence?? I am about 5ft 9" with a 30" inside leg.

any thoughts much appreciated.

If you have at least an inch of seatpost raised on the 21 inch then you will be able to set the seat ok on the 22 inch.I wouldnt think the reach would be hugely different between the two.

Thanks Banjo, your confirming what I was thinking. The reach is my biggest concern.... i guess i can get a shorter stem which would help.

thanks again

I have an '89 galaxy 23 inch, i'm 5'10" with a 31" inside leg

The frame is just a tad big for me, standing over the crossbar is a bit snug.

It did have a long reach with the original drop bars, but is ok now I have trekking bars fitted with a different stem, and I'm not comfy on drop bars anyway so my perspective maybe different.

Even so, I still have a couple of inches of seat tube out.

thanks for the replies. looking at the pictures of the bike I think it could take a shorter stem if needed. I dont like being over streched. I paid £395 for the bike so if need be I can resell sure I can get my money back.

The acid test is...

When you get it, stand astride it and feel the clearance between top tube and your crotch.

'30" inside leg' sounds short???

Using your 69" height and a 52% Sitting Height Ratio, your frame size is a 21 1/2" !!! Is your 21" frame clearance generous?

The difference won't be any bother.

well i've just carried out a little experiment, I raised 21" bike up by 1" on two planks of wood under each wheel then stood astride it with my cycling shoes on, both feet flat on the floor. its a sung fit but not a dangerous one!

all being well it will be ok.

Increasing the seattube 1" will raise the top tube 15/16", so it will be less dangerous than you thought.

The 2009 Dawes Galaxy turns out to be perfect really and comfortable to ride.

With the 631 frame and 520 forks the ride is very stable and positive the bike feels so solid on the road. Hill climbing appears to be easier or maybe its just my imagination. The bike is in almost new conditon and its all mine!!! I never thought I would own such a bike!!

The buy now price was £395 thats what I paid I'm really delighted.

I've got 7 days off work starting tomorrow so whatever the wheather I'm off cycling.

Sounds like you may be pleased with it:biggrin:

A lot less than half price for a year old bike has got to be good. I think it would have gone for more than that in an ebay auction.
