hi and help
took the Suntour 6sp freewheel off my new QR alloys - sounded a bit 'dry' - glad i did - just a brown thin liquid
anyway - apart from 76 small ball bearings falling out ...............:cursing:...

9 outer spokes are damaged
i guess by a chain jumping - so much for all the dork disk comments.....

luckily i still have the old rusty rim wheel - with decent spokes [same length ]
is it just a matter of replacing one-by-one..?

i 'think' so...but asking is this the way..?

cheers.

UPDATE

the gear assembly HAS to come off to allow the spoke to be threaded vertically up through the hole

I've taken the axle out - nothing appears obvious except the 2 large slots at the top

to use a bar to unscrew ..?

advice please............................thanks

and a LBS is not available easily

With regards to the spokes, well I'd replace the worst - one by one truing up each time. But that's me....hopefully someone else will advise. Good luck!

I'd say you've inadvertently taken the freewheel apart instead of removing it. It screws onto a Big Thread on the hub, which will tighten up over the years. You could use a bar in the slots, but a better option is to get the proper tool. According to the Sainted Sheldon, Park Tools do a "Suntour Two Prong" tool.

Sheldon's article is here

Regarding the spokes, take one out and measure from the end of the thread to inside the elbow. That's the length. Order some from your favourite online supplier and replace one by one as you suggest. Finally, adjust the mech travel screws so you don't have to repeat this anytime soon.

Ok, starting from the top....
  • Spokes are ok replaced one at a time and then re-trued each time, that is what I do to replace 1 so can't see why it is a problem done multiple times.
  • To remove the freewheel centre you can grab the body with a large pair of stilsons or mole grips and unscrew it. it is a normal righthand thread so will unscrew anti-clockwise. It might be worth popping out the pawls before doing this.
  • Freewheel can be rebuilt. Use a smear of grease to hold the bearings in place during re-assembly
  • Get a dork disk (I have always said this).

''as i said --- i have a quantity of good spokes''

The best way to get the freewheel off is with the proper remover fitted and held in place by the QR, just loosely enough to allow about a quarter turn when the freewheel does start to move. Clamp the remover in a solidly mounted bench vice (i.e. bolted down, not just clamped), and heave on the rim in the normal unscrew direction. If it doesn't move, get an assistant to join you in heaving on the rim.
Last time I removed one with a normal spanner, it was a 25mm ring spanner (about 10 or 11 inches long), with the wheel wedged vertically in a corner, and 13 stone of me standing on the spanner end and bouncing up and down.

Thanks for all the advice
after several applications of GT85 - then left overnight - used a large mole grip - 1 blow = success
cleaned and rebuilt with Rock & Roll grease - all 76 balls
runs smoothly but quite loud

found a way of getting 9 of the better spokes out of the original rusty rim
needed a wee straighten but rebuilt the wheel OK one-at-a-time

PS.......a dork disk is on its way .......
