Damaged Pedal threads

If a chainset has French pedal threads (14x125) and some numpty tried to force in some 9/16x30 pedals and destroys the first 2 to three turns of threading, It it possible to recut the French threading or will the thread have to be recut to the larger 9/16 threading.?

I am assuming the latter but hoping someone can convince me otherwise

Stick the french pedals in from the back of the crank and then from the front, not sure a few threads will make that much difference ?

I don't own the crankset yet but it is going for a song due to the damage so it may be worth a gamble .
