You could have a look at this

There's a number of different courses available. The standard Cytech Home Mechanics course is 2 days covering general things to look at and service on a bike :- headsets, chainsets, cassettes, how to adjust gears properly, then types of brakes and how to adjust them, and then wheels and tyres. Some places will do a shortened version (but not as a Cytech course) in 1 day, but they'd all be good for explaining the basics, especially if someone isn't sure about how to maintain a bike.

Separately, there's a Home Mechanic Plus course, which is much more advanced as it's a 5 day course and is actually part of the Cytech 2 mechanics course, just without the wheel building part and only has one complete bike dismantling/rebuilding session required rather than two. It does assume you've a fair amount of technical knowledge about bikes already and isn't for beginners.
