Higher bottom bracket, higher and much shorter top tube.

The geometry will make them feel stable at low but they as your weight is higher up they're not as stable at speed.

More mud clearance

Your weight is distributed more evenly for better control off-road like on a MTB.

Higher front end.

The under side of the top tube should be cable free and flatish to make carrying the bike easier.

The frames front triangle should be large to allow you to sling the bike on your sholder (no compact frames).

They use cantilever brakes for mud clearance. Which are terrible compared to V's or even duel pivots.

There's often no bottle mounts or mud-guards mounts on pure cyclo-x race frame. CX races are only an hour long and don't need them. A drinks bottle would only get in the way when you were running with the bike.

Ermmm, can't think of any more right now.

ok, maybe that's too much difference for what i want. my brother wants a new bike but he wants to go down the tow paths sometimes. i suggested a hybrid, something like the sirrus, but it's too girlie apparently. what he is really trying to say is he wants drop handlebars. so i suggested a cyclocross/tricross. i had a quick moozy round on t'internet last night and they seem to start from about £690, but he has £500 at a push.

So would a road bike with tougher tyres be ok for him?

It all depends on how good the tow path is. I can't get a MTB down mine when the grounds muddy. I could get any road bike down without any problems when the grounds hard.

Many manufactures have started labelling their 'do-it-all' / touring bikes as cyclo-x bikes because it's fashionable to do so.

I'm looking at the PLanet-x Kaffenback (amongst others).

It's not really what I would call a CX bike. Although there's no reason why it can't be fitted with wider tyres (32mm max) and ridden off-road.

I'm also looking at the Roadrat
http://www.cotic.co.uk/product/roadrat

and a 29er (Road bike sized wheels on a MTB!)
Probably an On-one Inbred.

Nearly forgot. Paul Milnes CX bike is under £500

It's not Orange like the photo but an attractive bluey gray

BTW, I don't count the tricross as a true cyclo-x bike either. (I know it's called a cyclo-x bike by Specialized). I've yet to see one racing.
