Just doing some late night browsing and stumbled across this recent article on the BBC news site, being a cyclist it caught my eye immediately.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15892074

The first argument is about being able to claim for costs if the other party involved in an accident is uninsured, but is about personal injury insurance rather than liability which is what the rest of the article goes on about.

Thoughts?

Its probably a good idea to get liability insurance but it doesn't harm to be rightly sceptical of claims made by the ABI. I am convinced it is in a cyclists interest to have insurance and convinced that compulsory insurance is only in the industry's interest. if it becomes compulsory they will make us pay through the nose like they do car insurance.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Pepe Tozzo probably would have found a no-win no-fee lawyer (backed by an insurance policy) - although a before-the-event policy (or add-on to his household insurance) would have worked too, and would have cost him a pretty notional sum.

The loss-of-income cover that the ABI are suggesting makes sense, although many people will be covered by sick pay. One good way to get 3rd-party cover is to join CTC or British Cycling. Theft insurance will always be expensive, however you buy it - bikes are extremely easy to steal, and extremely attractive to thieves.

must admit have thought about it , but never gone any further
+1 i've wondered a few times where i would legally stand if i was to run into a parked car or the likes if i lost concentration or was'nt paying attention, but there again i really cant afford anymore insurances so just have to be carefull.

being a recent convert to pedal power, and being self employed, i think i will be arranging some insurance as won't get sick pay. plus think it should be compulsory. I know please don't shout. Just think a minute. car drivers, motorcyclists, all pay and one of their main arguements against us normal people is we shouldnt be on the roads blah blah blah. so as a paid up member of the club, it would shut them up. Plus, we wouldnt have to go in search of blood sucking solisitors to fight our case in the event of an incident. let the insurance companies do it for us.

Cyclists are still a comparatively small community.
I've met both Pepe and Tom.

Horse riders, joggers, and pedestrians too next.
One could argue it is good for the(bad?) economy to fleece everyone for insurance.

Motorists might even get a reduction when those supposed endemic of staged accidents all moves to the bicycle.

If you join the CTC you get 3rd party insurance and 10% off pretty much where ever you go. The same as members of cycling clubs get in terms of discount and insurance I believe, so if you're not a member of one it's very handy. I first joined 2 years ago and mine has more than paid for itself.

Here in Belgium we have insurance to cover "responsabilite civile". It covers i.a. me on my bike, the dog running out into the road or even some one slipping on the snow outside my dorr if i have not cleared the pavement. One of the conditions of use of the Brussels bike hire scheme is that you have such insurance.

BC, LCC and CTC all have 3rd party insurance included in the subs. It's well worth having. A small price to pay for piece of mind.

I'm thinking of joining British Cycing, and the free insurance is one of the main reasons. A bit of peace of mind should I be involved in a collision.

A car drove into the back of my car last year , didnt do any damage as far as i could see and i was not hurt in anyway but just in case i get the details of the other driver and thinking i was doing the right thing told my Insurance company i would get the car checked. in the next 4 weeks i got almost 20 phone calls on my mobile phone and countless text all from "No win no fee" or as i like to call them "Leeches and parasites" solicitors.
I told every one of them to sod off and die , it would have been so easy to play along and get my £3000 whip lash pay out for no reason other than "well everyone does it" well no they don't all do it and to them who do - ******************* i wont put what i really think as its a family site .
