Cyclists that are caravanners.

Hi to you all out there. I am working on a project at present (no,not a college on.I am a cycling pensioner).
I am trying to get some indication of how many forum members are either caravanners in their own respect and take or want to take cycles with them or are part of a family and cycle whilst they are away with the caravan.
How do you transport your cycle/cycles?.

PS. This question only applies to the user/owners of the big boxes on wheels. The project that I refer to is only specific to the caravan, not Folders or Trailer Tents.

When I was married to my ex we had a caravan, and our bikes simply travelled inside the caravan.

Wow - a real invitation to 'come out' how can I refuse?

I think we've tried pretty much every form of camping available, and close to every means of carrying bikes.

At one point we had a caravan, with 4 bikes on the roof of the car and 2 inside the caravan. We used to go to camping meets and usually gathered a crowd to watch us unpack. Few people had ever seen anything like it.

We now have a campervan, which we converted from an LDV convoy minibus, and we tow a trailer with roofbars and 4 bikes on top.

We never had a problem, but our children having their bikes often attracted some envy from other children- and their parents. Most of them just wouldn't take bikes with them.

I always used to transport the bikes either in the caravan or on top of the car when the kids were younger. Inside the van was good for a short haul but a pest if you wanted to stop for a quick brew etc, on long runs. It's years since I had a caravan but I am very tempted to purchase another small one as the kids are gone and MOH is not interested. I am atttracted by the idea of taking time out for myself to travel to another area, do some day rides and have that bit of luxury on my return. It would also allow me the opportunity of going away all year round as camping is not really that tempting in the winter months. I don't do misery.

I am a caravanner and also a cyclist although the missus permits taking the bike away with me.

I am not sure which way would be best to transport it with weight issues etc.

Caravan owner and cyclist, only problem I have now is that the vans quite big and my car not quite big enough to tow the van full of stuff and bikes on the roof ( There is 5 of us ) . Wish I could take the whole lot away with us as it would make my holidays far more enjoyable.

If space permits, I put the bikes in the caravan. Putting them on a roof carrier further reduces what is already seriously compromised mpg, and a rear-mounted carrier with bikes on it would mean too much weight on the rear of the car. My caravan is a German design that would be strong enough to take a carrier on the rear end, similar to those fitted to motorhomes, but I cannot justify the expense.
