RIP.

I'm struggling to see how these two paragraphs fit together
Ian Graham, Broadland district councillor for Aylsham, said: “You do get a lot of traffic on that road and it is a 50mph speed limit but a lot of traffic, especially from Aylsham, does not obey the speed limit. Speeding is not unusual there.”

He did not think much more could be done to improve the safety on the A140 at Marsham

RIP, poor guy.

I have cycled along that road a few times in the past (Hainford to Aylsham) and its a horrible road to cycle on. The cars go along it very quickly. There are a couple of little bits of cycle path along there but nothing like nearly enough.

"Part-time teacher Kate Ross, 36, who lives close to the Plough, had driven past the cyclist on the road before the crash happened.

She said he was wearing a helmet, high visibility clothing and had lights on his bike and looked like he knew what he was doing."

This is the worrying bit! If she'd said he was hardly visible i'd have thought poor bloke, but maybe he was asking for it,but as she says,he was highly visible and knew what he was doing. What more can we do to stay alive?!

So sad.
With two cars travelling in opposite directions, you have to assume that one of them overtook where they shouldn't have, ie with oncoming traffic. I've been subjected to a few of those sorts of passes in recent weeks, and it's bloody terrifying.

RIP.
I was cycling very near (less than 1 mile) to there on Sunday about an hour before this must have happened. I would never consider cycling on the A140, it's simply not safe at all.

If drivers are competent and paying attention, there should be no need to wear hi-viz and all the rest. However, if the driver is drunk, on drugs, using a mobile phone or just driving dangerously no amount of hi-viz is going to save you!

It wont save you but in other circumstances it may make you easier to be seen. I wear it on my bikes and motorbikes. In my mind there is no doubt you can see someone in a vis vest much easier than someone who is not wearing one.

The sad thing is that some politicians choose to shift the emphasis for safety mainly onto cyclists.

There was a phone in on the local radio on Monday about cyclists safety on the roads. The usual they should be banned, and they don't pay road tax rubbish came out,but what struck me most was how many contributors(cyclist friendly as well as the numpties) said that cyclists wearing dark clothing, especially black, made them/us harder to see. It's ok saying that drivers should be paying attention but to suddenly find an unlit black object in your path what can they/we do?

if drivers were paying attention and driving competently, there would be no situations where 'an unlit black object' would suddenly appear, or at least none where being highly visible would have helped - i.e. car speeding round a blind bend etc.
Unfortunately, we all know that a lot of drivers are useless and very dangerous, so wearing hi-viz certainly helps.
The government clearly needs to do much much more to improve conditions for cyclists, and drivers should be given clear advice in how to 'deal' with cyclists on the road when they take their driving lessons/test. Also, the general public need educating about how roads are funded and the role of so called 'road tax' which is actually vehicle tax!
