Mercedes was coming out of side road and road cyclist braked too late coming from the side, went over the handlebars and smacked back of his head into the car door as he landed.

Driver got out just as my wife & I got there; we asked cyclist if he was ok, he said no and described pain in back of head, collarbone and arm. Told me his name and asked us to call his wife, which my Mrs did. I didn't want to move him at all, luckily a PCO saw me talking to the ground and came over, called ambulance and we waited, talking to cyclist.

In meantime, cars were stopping offering assistance, a passing doctor stopped & checked him over, a passing off-duty ambulance driver stopped and started the prep for the ambulance - the cyclist couldn't have crashed in a better place for support!

Hopefully he's ok, the inside of his helmet was cracked from the impact of hitting the door so he'll be having head x-rays. His wife said she'd call us later to let us know.

Good to see how many drivers stopped to offer help!

Sorry if this is a bit rambling, first & last post hopefully of this type from me!

It's good to see that not all drivers are total twonkers as often posted on here.

Lets not turn it into a helmet debate....but I take your point.

I hope he recovers quickly.

Yeah, not every person is an a***ole behind the wheel, only a very small minority are. I would like to think people on the whole are kind and decent, but I'm afraid as I get older, this view is constantly getting eroded.

Being there would have at least halted the erosion a little, was really good to see.

I bet the merc would not have been there if he was not wearing a helmet.

Personally I am glad he had one on, and I bet he was.

All this if talk about helmets...?

It always revolves around the cyclist.....well if the Merc driver had chosen to go earlier/later/catch a bus or ride a bike it also wouldn't have happened.

If my Uncle Bob had been born a girl he'd have been my Auntie Margaret.

OP - Hope the rider's ok.

Got an update from his Mrs this morning:

"He has cracked a vertabrae in his spine/neck and a broken elbow. Nothing is paralysed and awaiting scan results from a specialist hospital. Hopefully no surgery will be required and he will be home in a day or two."

Judging from the angle i saw the crash, the Mercs was stationary at the corner for what seemed a good time before the crash; i think he was expecting the cyclist to go round him so waited. My guess is that the cyclist was looking at his Garmin as he was coming up to a junction, and saw the Mercs too late. Just a hunch.
