Wondered if anyone knows where I can find some decent cycling videos, one that show how/when to change gear, what gear to be in etc... and arent' too technical or boring...?
Trying to explain to #3 which gear to be in, but figured as he's a youngling, watching a vid might be better then mum harping on

I've looked on Youtube, but got bomabrded with loads of American techical type vis which I know will go over his head
Cheers xx

Im not sure you can definitively make any guide on "what gear" as what gear is best is largely subjective. How and when ?
Sounds like a few trips out with you riding behind #3 barking orders is the order of the day.

Still searching but found nothing, plenty of "how to fix....." videos on YouTube, but he's watched most of them already
The problem with me tecahing him is that we don't get any oppertunities during the week, so it's Saturday club rides, which is when he's trying like mad to keep up with the bigger kids , Had jus thought if he could sit at the pc a few times before the weekend & watch something he might pick up a few tips

here.........
how old is he - I read an article the other night (which I can't actually recall where it was but I'm sure my history would tell me) about gears and how to use them/understand them (being fairly new to multi gear bikes myself) which made perfect sense to even dumb blonde me, and resulted in a much easier ride today........depends on his age as to whther it would go over hi head or not

He's 7...so might be a bit OTT for him LOL
But cheers... #1 could do with some gear advice & he's almost 19

How many gears does he have?

My 6 year old has a 7 speed bike (no front derailleur), and he got the hang of gears pretty quickly after we were talking about gears 1, 2 & 3 for going uphill, 4 for flat, and 5, 6 & 7 downhill. Obviously it's a bit subjective, but that way of thinking worked with him. Sometimes, for example, he'll be in an "uphill" gear, but will decide that he's not very tired, so will switch the "flat ground" gear (4).

Only problem is that he's constantly asking me what gear I'm in, and I never know!

I've had people say to me they never know what gear to be in, "having so many to choose from!"

I just tell them to change up when they feel they're starting to spin and change down when they feel they're pushing too much. As mentioned by other posters, it's just a case of getting the feel of it.

He currently has 21..which TBH is one of the problems!
I've told him to ignore the gripshift on the left side & just use the right side, but he keeps twisting it without realising, he's just about got the hang on the rear 7, after a couple of hours on Beach Green this eve.
I am thinking of taking the front derailleur/gripshift off for now & leaving it for while until he a bit more able!
