HI All,

A group of us at work are planning a charity ride from near Uttoxeter (Between Stoke-on-Trent and Derby) to Snowdon.

We are all novice cyclist and are looking to were possible keep off any major roads as we're expecting approx 10 people. Can anybody lend any advice on a route we could take?? it's difficult to find good information online

Thanks

hi - i biked back home from anglesey to wellingborough the other week and although i can only comment on my route - the A5 from anglesey to where it bumps into the A483 wasn't bad at all - not much traffic and although there were proper big hills they were steady and not steep as such - once i deviated off the A5 it was a different story real sharp shockers . i went from there to wem then near market drayton , eccleshall , rugeley . think the busiest place was rugeley and that wasn't bad also it had calmed down on the hill front by then . i have the gps file if you want , but like i say i don't know if there is a easier way or not - this was just what i done and it was hilly when off the main road . also the small roads were proper small at one point it seemed like i was going through farm yard but it worked , i was on a giant rapid 2 what coped ok so a road bike would be ok - believe me you won't be bombing along

The A5 is an old coaching route and the flattest way to Holyhead to get to the ferry for Ireland. Those folks from way back when knew a thing or two about taking the easy way. Every other route will be alot more hilly, but more traffic free. The A5 can be very busy at times with caravans, lorries and a local breed known as the "Boyo racer".

Route plan carefully, and check out gradients. Off the main roads you will get some big steep climbs. You cant avoid the hills but main roads best bet. They aren't massively busy, but traffic is quick.

I would ride to Baschurch (between Shrewsbury and Oswestry) and take the B4397/4396/4391 to Bala: there is a long climb up over the Berwyns which I have done several times with the fully laden Brompton but traffic is less than some sections of the A5. It is a scenic route.

Thanks for the advcie guys. The current thinking is using Route 5 from stoke to the top end of Wales. Staying overnight around Bangor and then riding down to snowdon the next day. Has anyone rode this before???

Go recce the route in a car or bits of the area at a time by bike. Other than that get hold of a local club and ask them to draw you a route.

Route 5 along the coast is nice and easy so the best bet IMHO
