Cycling tights-bib or waist fitting?

I’ve just started looking around for cycling tights. A few years ago I got some bib shorts, and find that the shoulder straps tend to slip a bit. It was explained to me last week that I should not be wearing a tee shirt under the straps, and this could be the reason for slipping. (It feels a bit odd to not have anything under the top half of the body).

So, while I don’t mind getting the bib type of tights I obviously wouldn’t want the shoulder straps to be a problem. Has anyone tried both types? What are your experience in respect of riding comfort, and do you have any issues with the shoulder straps, or with ordinary waist level tights slipping down a bit?

Wear a vest or tight fitting base layer under the bibs?

You can get women's bibs with a halterneck, don't know if anything similar exists for men

Maybe the straps are too long, don't see the pros having issues. With a vest, the straps would be against the skin
Time for some needlework?

I don't know, I only wear waist tights or shorts

Get the needle and thread out, put a tuck in to shorten?

I would maybe wear waist high tights if over bib shorts other wise full bibs. Never had an issue with loose bibs sounds like the fit is not great. Oh and I wear tight vest under armour all year , just hate wearing loose fitting clothes on the bike.

Yes, I like the idea of bibs really. (The bib shorts I have are used for the 3 decent seasons). I just want something for the winter months, although not -5 temps. I think there must be something not quite right with the fitting of the straps on my bib shorts.

sounds like the braces are a touch too long (or badly designed). I tend to wear t shirt underneath too. If you wear 'em next to skin, even if that's the "proper" way (for that Freddie Mercury look) the straps are going to be looser aren't they

I used to wear shorts fitting at waist. I did not like them because it keeps coming down even after getting tighter ones. Then there is restriction at the waist.
I now wear bib shorts from Decathlon. They stay in place. No change in positions. Never had problems with straps. I wear base layer both over and under the straps depending on what I found first when getting ready.
The only problem with bibs is having a wee on the road side.

I have bibs - much better than shorts for my less than well defined waist!

I don't like the feel of the straps on my skin and either wear a Helly Hansen Lifa T underneath the bibs or this underneath and a cycling T over the top of the bibs:

The above stops the straps chafing me and is a brilliant piece of kit in its own right.
