A friend at work enquired if I was getting any rebate for cycling in to work from the government. What does he mean?

I can't say I've heard about it myself?

I vaguely recall some deductible, or rebate related to use of a bicycle for commuting that applied in some parts of the USA - it had applied to cars for years, and only just (at the time) been extended to bicycles.

Here we have the imperfection that is the Cycle To Work scheme (if your employer runs it).

Otherwise, governmental incentives supporting reduction of Britain's congestion and CO2 emissions from transport are mostly tied into coal powered electrimagical cars.

It has been widely badly reported in the Metro\Daily Mail that a councillor claimed a minute amount for using his bike for work purposes (the report said that it was for commuting, but it was not getting to and from work). Perhaps your friend is referring to this?

I can claim back mileage for travelling between work sites, but not for getting too and from work and I believe this is quite normal practice.

In my work you can claim 10p/mile if you cycle on business. This does not cover cycling to work, nor does it apply if you have a C2W bike as technically it belongs to Council (until end of agreement).

then you need to fill in P87 to get the extra 10p per mile you are allowed to claim for business mileage. assuming you use your own bike and not a CTW bike or a bike belonging to your employer.

the standard rate is 20p per mile with AFAIK no upper limit on miles.

Thanks for the info. I'll file this for future use.
