Hello I hope you are well, I’m a final year student working on a project about cycling safety, and I’m looking for regular cyclists to share their experiences through a short survey, your insights would be incredibly valuable in helping me understand key safety concerns and ways to improve the cycling experience. The survey is quick and anonymous, and your feedback will play a big role in shaping my research. I completed your survey. I fear that youre labouring, as many people do, that the answer to the problem of the danger posed to cyclists by the drivers of motor vehicles is to *increase their visibility*. Cyclists are not invisible. To perpetuate the myth that cyclists are difficult to see puts the responsibility for being seen on the victims of road danger - where it belongs is firmly in the hands of the people who pose the danger: drivers.
Ive been cycling long enough to have tried all the 'safety' options, and I've come to the conclusion that no safety aid in the world will save a cyclist if the driver isn't bloody looking.

Ps. If we want cycling to be less dangerous we need to remove the danger and for that we need better driver education, lower speeds, Presumed Liability in RTCs and a judicial system which takes road safety much more seriously.

Having had more time to think back over 60 years, most of my spills have been caused by losing the front wheel on gravel or black ice. Some on potholes.
Only once has a car hit me, when they didn't expect me to be following another car. They tried to turn right quickly, between two cars, but I was there! By far the most serious accident I've had and the emergency services were on hand very quickly, including an air ambulance.

I won't mention "clipless" incidents, but they were over 30 years ago.

Don't think any device, tool, clothing or lighting would have helped to avoid any of these incidents. Most, I have to admit, were "own" errors.

Your perspective is valuable, and I completely agree that the primary responsibility for road safety lies with drivers and the infrastructure that governs road behavior. As a cyclist myself, I understand firsthand that visibility tools, while helpful in certain contexts, can't fully address the dangers posed by inattentive or reckless drivers.
In my research, I’m aiming to gather as many perspectives as possible, including those that highlight the systemic issues you've pointed out, such as driver accountability and the need for infrastructure changes. While my current project focuses on technology to support visibility and awareness, I am also looking at broader contexts, including how these tools fit into the wider goal of promoting a safer environment for cyclists furthermore solving some issues like reckless drivers and infrustrcutre is genreally very hard to solve and not in out hands, therefore I am aiming to find a gap that I can address and hopefully it targets issues that the majorty of commuters face.

Q26 is oddly out of place within the questionnaire design.

Thank you for pointing that out! Q26 was included as a clarification question based on insights from previous surveys, where many participants expressed an interest in radar technology for cycling safety. The aim was to gauge more specific interest, but I appreciate your feedback, and I’ll definitely take this into account for improving the survey design.
