for the paltry sum of a fiver (proceeds to various charities), you can walk or cycle on the virtually completed 5 mile (costing @£445million

M/way opens to other vehicles in June. Will be glad when it is open. The amount of diversions & ever-changing closures thats been going on to facilitate this monstrosity on my commute over the past 3 years has really been quite annoying. Hopefully it will lead to a decrease in the amount of traffic on my route, but judging by the location of the new junctions i have my doubts

I won't be anywhere near at the time so I'm out.

It would have been fun to try and do a quick century ride on fresh tarmac with no cars to worry about. As far as I can see though, you get to do just one 4km or 14 km loop?

I did a charity ride on the Silverstone F1 race circuit last year. We had that to ourselves for 2 hours and could ride round as many times as we wanted in that period.

One of our evening runs takes in half a mile of the A59, the tarmac is so smooth it's a joy to ride. Wouldn't want to do it during the working day though.

If it'd been from the Fullarton Roundabout (East) and back, I might just have done that... might still think about it.

They've resurfaced a couple of roads near me and the difference it makes even to an unfit slowcoach like me is incredible. A stark contrast to the 'detour' of the NCN 75 because of the work being done on the motorway, the road up beside where they are building the velodrome isn't much fun!

Before they opened the last section of the M60 motorway to complete the ring around Manchester I took a Sunday morning blast by MTB from Denton to Middleton along the lovely new tarmac, dodging contractors and equipment as I went. It opened about 2 weeks later but I don't recall paying for the privilege (other than 'I pay my road tax!')

Thanks for that NR, might try that. And with the money going to charity its seems a good excuse.

I once rode a Puch maxi, in two-tone brown and with a crude painting of satan on the tiny fuel tank (it wasn't mine), up and down a section of the M25 before it opened.

What a fantastic vehicle. Fiver from a jumble sale; as far as I remember the only problem with it was jellfied fuel-oil mix in the tank.

Funnily enough I rode past the M74 this morning, noticed a few contractors cars sitting on it and the thought did cross my mind about taking an unofficial ride along it

I taught myself to drive in a MK1 Escort van owned by Gleeson's civil engineers when I was working for the engineers setting out the new M40 from Oxford to High Wycombe. I used to bomb up and down the mud base of the road in first gear; it was two weeks before I dared to change to second!
