My wife and I are both off for two weeks, and she's said she wants to get away for a few days. Sh!t the bed ! I'm trying to beat my monthly mileage record here. Quite pleased when she said she'd booked up a place in Newquay, anyone know good cycling routes round there (or roads to keep away from) for 40 mile-ish rides ?

Thanks in advance.

I just come back from Holywell Bay and I took the bike . Be warned it's hilly !!! . I did most of my riding early morning so there less traffic . I cycled the lanes out the back of Newquay around Trerice house and Newlyn East . Just watch out when descending there's plenty of blind bends and road surfaces are not brilliant .I adopted the policy of pulling over for any traffic on the single track lanes and letting then by . The camel trail from Padstow to Bodmin is doable in a road bike but better on a hybrid and thats traffic free . I have a Cornish cycling map that I'm willing to post to you if you post it back to me when you're back just send me a pm

Down in Newquay from this weekend. Of course I am taking the bike with us.
Took it last year too. Get off the main artery running south and you have loads of great roads, especially the roads hugging the cliff tops and beaches. As above, always hilly. Gorgeous riding though.

You can go coast to coast in 40 miles!

Ride Newquay, St Mawgan, Padstow, Camel Trail to Bodmin, old A30 roads to Mitchell, NW via St Newlyn East back to Newquay.
Camel Trail Padstow through Wadebridge to Bodmin is absolutely fine on a road bike and recommended. Trail NNE up the Camel valley is a bit rougher but still OK on a road bike (YMMV). Last 15km of Newquay loop linked above is hilly and mostly minor roads (see advice from @13 rider upthread).
Note there is a ferry from Padstow to Rock if you want to go further NE and avoid A39. Also the coast road both NE to Padstow or SW via St Agnes and Portreath to Hayle is a great, if challenging route.
Finally consider going S via the B3275 and Probus to the Roseland peninsula and take the King Harry ferry across the River Fal to Trellisick, then W via Carnon Downs and N past W edge of Truro to Zelah and back N to Newquay.
Keep away from A30.
Have a great time.

If use the Padstow to Rock ferry be aware it does not run a low tide normally mid day £4 single person and bike
