I want to go out today but it is really foggy. The forecast says more of the same. It is also very cold but not freezing.

Has anyone got any tips or advice please?

Keep your lights on and ride like it was at night

Lights - you need those lights on.

Plus - fluorescents to make the most of the daylight - picks you out from the surrounding gloom
and
reflectives - any motorists around driving with lights on - their lights will pick up your reflectives - again making you more visible.

I remember going out in the fog on a night once turned down a lane and by god it was the scariest thing I'd ever experienced.

I imagine if you suffer from claustrophobia it would be pretty bad.

It was soo thick - it was extremely bad and 'lights just reflect back, mostly.

Fog is great for aligning beams as I discovered last night. Also found that as with cars a brighter light is less effective. Glad one of my lights has LED and Halogen bulbs and allows me to alternate. The LED was far more effective.

Whereas for to be seen some of the lower powered LED lights aren't bad compared to their much brighter counter parts in more normal conditions, bright LEDs come into their own in fog. Fairly good rear systems like cateye el-1100 and Marses show up fairly well too relative to their much more underpowered brothers and sisters.

The thing to watch with lights in fog is that many lights shine light sideways and upwards as well as forwards.

Normally, this is great for making you visible from the side. But any upwards-shining light will light up the fog in front of your face, making it harder for you to see through it.

Fortunately, this is usually easy to fix with a judiciously applied bit of black insulting tape.

I was out yesterday - foggy in the morning, but it cleared up and was beautiful in the afternoon. Then freezing fog as it got dark again. On the last bit getting home, I met the local roadie club coming the other way. Those guys had some seriously bright lights!

The frontal surfaces of me and the bike were covered in a thin layer of ice when I got home!

I went out twice over the weekend but didn't go very far either time. Yesterday morning the roads were a bit icy in places and today I was just too cold and murky in the fog. Found it much harder work in the cold today as well.
