Hi,

I live in London and enjoy cycling but hate traffic especially large vehicles. I have been riding on various national cycle routes in or near London and most of these are brilliant. I've recently subscribed to OS maps (£20 per year and you get access to all the OS 1 in 25,000 and 1 in 50,000 maps in the UK) and this makes it easy to find nearby national cycle routes (green circles on the map).

Currently learning how to get the best out of route planning software, gpx files and my cycle sat nav (Mio 310)

Glad you are enjoying it

The OS maps are superb as they often allow you to find quiet roads that run parallel to the busy ones, and achieve your aims

Welcome aboard

www.gpxeditor.co.uk allows you to do route planning and switch between OS maps, OpenStreetMap, OpenCycleMap and Google maps (for street view)

It's not the most intuitive, and can be a bit quirky, but I like it.

Thanks. I've just tried gpxeditor and it is amazing! Soooo much better than the software you get with subscribing to OS maps. You can create a cycle route from OS 1 in 50,000 maps by clicking on points every so often and it fills in route in between. And you can specify whether you want walking, cycling or car routes so it knows whether to look for footpaths or cycle paths or only roads.

The only limitation is that it doesn't seem to include altitude information but you can put that on after you have created your route using http://www.gpsvisualizer.com (look up elevations feature)

You can get altitude information if you're a paid subscriber. And a few other features.
