My work have just started a cycle to work scheme. I have absolutely no need to buy a new bike.....yet feel it would be remiss of me to not buy one! For example, a Spesh Tarmac, which was new last year, with old season discount and tax incentives on this scheme, will only cost me £680. Anyone else have the dilemma of feeling like you really should get a new bike, even though u really don't need it?

Check if you can get last seasons bike without paying a fee to the store for using Cycle 2 Work. Not all shops will do it without a fee.

Yep, bought a frivolous single speed bike last year that I didn't really need.
Quite fancied one and my employer did c2w so took advantage.

This year I have filled the benefits package in quickly and sent it in before I get tempted to do anything similar ^_^

Exactly. C2W charge the retailer a percentage of the cost which is probably half of their margin on an RRP bike. On a sale bike the retailer might actually be making a loss so they will want to charge you the C2W fee.

yes... but since i earn less than 10k I'll save no tax and no NIS so a £1000 bike will cost me at least £1000. But... I receive a small amount of housing benefit and whilst i don't expect this to increase as a result of the salary sacrifice, it might (I can't find any info stating one way or the other)... and if it does increase as my take home pay drops, a £1000 bike might cost me considerably less.

Nope. I have tried explaing to my partner why I don't really want to ride a fifty mile charity sportive on my 3 speed classic trekking style BSO but she doesn't get it.

Ah, but if your wife cycled as well, you'd have to explain why she doesn't really need another bike, but you do. She also would notice n+1 new addition. Especially a bright blue Giant Defy Advanced
