I have ridden Carreras and they are nice bikes. I am however concerned by the fact that they are a Halfrauds brand. On one ride out a group of us used those bike. We had three chain problems and one 'loss of pedal' within 5 miles.

i have a carrera bike and it was fine out of the box. that said, i think i got lucky with a proper mechanic. if you get the bike, have it checked over by a knowledgeable friend/colleague/local bike shop. if you go to the lbs they may charge a small fee, but at least you'll know all is in order.

I am sure the bike will be OK, though if you could get one of the bikes in their own Boardman range that might be even better.

As alecstilleyedye says you need to make sure it is set up properly, as Halfords have poor reputation (to put it mildly) in this regard.

If you search for previous threads on this topic I am sure someone once mentioned that they had found a way of using their Halfords voucher at their local bike shop. If this is actually possible it would be a much less risky option than buying from Halfords.

Having said that there are plenty of people on the forum who have had a good experience with Carreras and Halfords.

They can also supply a "Dolan Mythos" www.bikes-dolan.uk.com/

it's a carbon frame and has Shimano Ultegra groupset. Quite a nice ride, and if you don't like the frame you can always transfer the groupset to another frame :-)

(Terry Dolan Built most of the frames for Chris Boardman during his career and built the original frame for his 1 hour effort, but this was sidelined as his sponors were not happy that he was not riding one of their bikes!)

My LBS won't touch a halford cycle2work bike in the first 12 months - summat about the warrantee. i.e. if anything goes wrong Halford can point to 'shody' work done by someone else and wiggle out of any doing/paying for anything.

Not sure if this is just my LBS being paranoid or having been burnt that way before.

Dolan Mythos Price

Yes it is £1,000 and you can get it from Halfords, because I did.

I hadn't seen one so I rang up and Terry was very helpful taking my sizes etc and recommended the right size frame. I found the nearest shop, some 130 miles away and drove there and tried one, because £1,000 is a lot to spend on the wrong bike.

have had no problems with it so far, and the level of equipment on it is very good, although the saddle is proving a little too hard for me at the moment.

ive just bought a Kona Jake on the cycle2 work scheme and I got it from Halfrauds..........The only way I would get it, was to go to Rickmansworth where there is a bikehut. This is a part of Halfords, but only do bikes.........and are staffed by people who actually know about bikes............at least Rickmansworth branch is!
I think there are about 5 of em through the country.....its worth travelling to one of em, i reckon.

My Jake is the nuts, and as they knocked the price down because it is an 08, I had an extra £65 worth of free cash to spend on accessories...........;) plus the £50 for it being over £500:biggrin:

got loads of shiney stuff now

I ordered a spezialized through Halfrauds with my cycle2work and didn't get the size right. They refused to change it, so make sure you order the right size.
