Hi
I'm looking for my first pair of proper cycling shorts now I've invested in a road bike, think I need something with plenty of padding after completing my first long ride (20 miles).

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good quality short?

Depends on your budget; I use Pearl Izumi's which cost £40-50 and also DHB bib shorts (£25-50).

Others will recommend Tenn UK (£15-20) which I've got as a backup and they're also OK.

Still others will go for Assos/etc costing £100+ to £100+++

You get what you pay for IMO, but something is better than nothing. My first pair were a cheap pair of Trek shorts. Thought they were great. Then upgraded to Santini bib shorts and couldn't believe what I was missing. Just got bought a pair of Louis Garneau bibs costing £90 and I was absolutely blown away. Have not tried Assos, but if the theme I've gone through is anything to go by then they are probably sofa comfy!!!

Assos and Rapha do some reasonable bib shorts. They are pretty comfortable. Great quality as well.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Get thee to Decathlon and rejoice at spending seven quid on a pair, to try out before spending silly money on top brands.
perfectly adequte up to 30 miles or so, i use these for commuting and then use their better quality bib shorts which have been great even over 70 miles .
On a side note i use a dectahlon helmet and when i compared it to a kask helmet like the sky boys use there was not much in it with regards to vents /weight etc apart from the price. The decathlon carbon bike with 105 uses the same frame as a french cyclist used to win races on according to a review in a cycling magazine.

Many Thanks for all your advice and recommendations,

I will look at a few of these at the weekend as well as some cycle tops.

I'd go straight to bib shorts if I could now, I rarely use my non-bib shorts any more. Also, I don't think anyone's mentioned that you should just wear them and no grundies - no chafing from seams you see!

I have shorts at £60 and ones at £15 and on a 60+ mile ride i could not tell any difference, so its all down to personal choice .
I always wear grundies and have never had the dreaded chafing so again down to personal choice.

For what it's worth, I've found Endura FS260 shorts to be comfy and hard wearing for £40 odd quid.

I have tenn under shorts that have decent padding.

Went to sports direct and bought some trousers and the padding is not great so will probably wear the undershorts under the trousers.

I'm also new to road cycling but found the tenn shorts very comfy.
