Hi all,

It's been a while since I've logged on so apologies.

I have been busying cycling!

I have a question regarding cycling shoes, and the story for this question, goes like this.......

I ride a mountain bike each day to work, and I have DMR V8's for pedals. I thought it would be good to get some cycling shoes.
So off I went to the shop a got some Specialized shoes (£60), not the most expensive, but I wasn't sure how I would get on.
The shoes I bought had caps over the cleat connections, so I could use them on my V8's. My commute to work is quite short but hilly.
For the commute the shoes seemed quite good, although I was finding it difficult to feel the pedals and place my feet, which was to be
expected.

I then decided to go off for 32 miles and try the shoes out. For about 25 miles I had numb feet!! mainly my toes! It very much affected my ride!

So I went straight back to my trainers! However I have just purchased a Road Bike for longer distances as I will be covering 100 miles plus on weekends.
Currently I have straps on my pedals, but would like to know if I can get some cycling shoes for the road bike, with cleats, or will my feet suffer again???!!!!

So my question is, has anyone else ever suffered the same fate. Does anyone else get numb feet! Am I just odd! (Likely), or was it because I wasn't using cleats?

i had numb toes for a few weekend rides, but not others after about a month. I discovered it was my compression socks, they have thicker weavings in places and the seams were thicker around these areas and causing discomfort when i wore plain sports socks the problem vanished.

Your straps are probably too tight. Loosen the middle strap and the toe strap a bit and just keep the one nearest your ankle done up properly. this will relieve the pressue over the top of your foot and your feet won't go numb. The middle and toe strap don't need to be full on tight.

this used to happen to me, and this is what i did to stop it happening. have done it with all my shoes ever since and have been fine.

Interesting, I did have socks on that have the tighter weave for bridge support. Thanks, I'll bear that one in mind.

Wow, three responses and all seem to fit! I was kind of going very tight on the straps!

Assuming you get you current shoes sorted out .....

I assume your shoes have the 2 hole connection for SPD under the cover like this?

If so you can get these with the cleats to fit your shoes..

Also make sure you have nice, firm inner-soles. I had some foot discomfort with my Shimano SPD shoes, which went away when I found a better pair of inner-soles.
