Any advice on shoes, what are the ones called that you don't have to walk about on your heals and do they really make a difference

Yes, they make a difference (as you can use power all the way round te pedal stroke rather than just on the down stroke), and if you buy SPDs and a pair of MTB shoes (with a deeper tread pattern and more of trainer look to them), the cleats don't interfere so much with your walking.

I have the Shimano SPD pedal/shoe combination.

The cleats hardly touch the ground so there's no hindrance to my normal walking style and no irritating click-clack watch out , cyclist coming , noise from them.

As has been said before, mtb or touring style shoes with spds can be very good for walking about on.

Fit is very specific to you though so it's best to try them on before you buy. I have found Adidas Minretts to be excellent on and off the bike but they might not suit everyones feet.

Having a stiff sole does make a massive difference in my opinion to comfort on the bike, performance I'm not sure about but I'll take comfort over performance most days.

SPDs are horrible. Use Time Atacs.
