Cycle roof racks

So recently on my travels I've seen a few people with the cycles on the roof of their cars, but they've loosened the stem and turned it with the handlebars 90 degrees and removed the seat and seatpost, is this really necessary and is their a reason why anyone would do it?

Aerodynamics? Smaller surface area for wind to connect with so safer?
Seems sensible to me

I sometimes remove the seat post /saddle if its raining, cos the saddles leather.

Mind you i need a step ladder to get my bike on our mpv roof rack .
