The internet is best, Park Tools website has everything you need to know and it never goes out of date.

A little while ago, I bought "Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance". It's packed with a lot of technical stuff that you probably won't find elsewhere, eg. tightening torques for most threaded fasteners on a bike. The problem is that it is curiously un-engaging, and the illustrations are a bit "Whole Earth Catalog" IMHO.

Park Tools, as others have said, are really good, both in print and on the web.

Have also bought Zinn, mentioned above, and will undoubtedly find it useful somewhere along the line but also prefer youtube for videos which show you how and leave no room for doubt.

Good luck with whatever you need to do by the way, I'm a regular on here badgering people for advice on various things and it truly is a good place to visit. I've been buggering around with fitting a new chain and cassette, adjusting brake calipers and generally giving a bit of TLC to my winter affair tonight.

Replacing a BB is next on the agenda and youtube will be the place...

I got this book a few years ago and it gives good text with illustrations - it is 'wire-o bound' so that it lays flat. Of course, books 'date' but they are 'to hand' when one is working a way through a repair or replacement - when a screen might not be easy to read. Usually a combination of all these media - Park and BicycleTutor are great as others have mentioned - is the way to go. Good luck!

I've picked up a few second-hand and I got the Park Tools book as a prezzie a few years ago but internet is best really and some of the videos make it very easy to understand what you need to do.

For anyone who wants nearly 700 pages of bicycle maintenence porn, Barnetts Bicycle Manual has the lot. It is also widely available as a pdf download.

Although no good for modern bikes the book I used to use the most was Richards Bicycle book, the paperback edition with the photo of the guy with his bike on the cover. I haven't really looked at modern books as I use a combination of the internet and Barnetts.

Thanks for the response guys, yes I do find the internet the best source for up to date info and videos. I just thought I might find a manual handy for when I'm not on the computer and fiddling with the bike in the garage. Thanks for that PDF baldcyclist

I purposely didn't provide a download link for the Barnetts manual as I was unsure wether it was officially in the public domain.

Zinn is ace if you are wanting to know a specific thing and know where to look but like other's say its not engaging. I've a few others maintenance books too but I also prefer the web. The book I like best for the times however when you haven't a computer and don't want to print anything out is Guy Andrews Road bike Maintenance, mainly because it has a spiral binding ;-)
