Both!

I went out on a ride last week and somehow managed to forget to put them on. By about the 10 mile point I was beginning to get that tingly feeling. I'd assumed that the horrible numbness I suffered when I started riding frequently went away mostly because my hands had gotten used to it or that I'd improved my riding position (leaning forward less putting less pressure on the nerves). As it turns out, without my gloves it's pretty much still there.

Also - gloves give you a better grip especially if you're sweating.

Also - if you're unfortunate enough to fall off, your natural reaction is to put your hands out in front of you. I'd sooner wreck a pair of gloves than loose the skin off my hands

I use them all the time. If I go out without them by the time I'm at the top of my road I have realized and am going back to pick them up.

Long and short for me. Mind you short would be ten miles. I find them a comfy interface between you and the bars, they also have a absorbent bit to wipe sweat from your face.
I wouldn't wear them riding for a couple of miles with my kids, in that instance I wouldn't wear lycra padded bibs either. :-)

thanks gary i shall go buy a pair this weekend some really good points !!
No problem - One more thing, I have very big hands and struggle to get gloves big enough and so I've learned the hard way - tight fitting gloves are no help whatsoever they actually add to the pressure on the nerves. Try some on and get a good fitting pair, it makes all the difference

You can train yourself not to do this. I was really surprised when I was in a crash a few months ago that, even 15 years after I last rode a horse, my natural reaction was to tuck myself up and roll (the way jockeys do).

I'm quite surprised that pro cyclists don't learn to fall properly, because it would probably reduce the number of broken collar bones quite significantly.
