I once saw an ad for a thick rubber band to mount a little torch to a walking stick, and out of it was born this idea using old inner tubes to mount torches to handlebars, helmets etc. Some solutions are simple enough, so here is how to mount a torch to a handlebar using an old inner tube.
Right, listen carefully
Cut a piece of inner tube about the same length as your torch. The torch already has a piece of inner tube round it as I use it as a helmet light, and the tube stops the alu scratching the helmet finish. For the cognoscenti it's a Conti 700x19-25 round the torch, and a Halfords own brand 26x 1.95-2.2 for the mount...... The torch is an Aldi 3wCree circa 2010.

Next, use a sharp knife to pierce the inner tube about an inch from both ends. For the cognoscenti it's a Blackfox Zytel liner lock knife in Ti finish.

Make sure the hole goes all the way through.... for the cognoscenti that's my left forefinger....

Push one end of the torch through one end of the inner tube. You can see the new 2012 3w Cree Tesco torch on the table , already clad with inner tube for helmet mounting....

Pass the inner tube round the handlebar (Easton EA50 low rise, 25.4 clamp, 635mm, for sale, tenner. Scratched)

Push the end of the inner tube mount onto the back of teh torch, pull tight to ensure a snug fit.

It works equally well for mounting a torch to a helmet, simply pass a slightly longer piece of inner tube through the vents:

Tidy the ragged ends up with a wrap of electrical tape. Take a spare piece in your pocket in case the tube splits when you take it off at the cake stop.

I bought one of those - it lasted maybe 5 minutes before splitting at one of the openings! Your solution looks much tougher.

How about a little offcut of inner tube between handlebars and torch - protecting the handlebars and giving a bit of shock absorption to the torch?

I've got a simple loop of inner tube tied with a knot and permanently attached to my helmet. I can simply insert a torch whenever I need to.

I wrap the torches in inner tube for that very reason. The one on the helmet us brand new and just there for show!

fat rubber band? o-ring.
I've tried tent rubbers and o rings, and neither are as snug and flexible as the inner tube. The pierced inner tube grips with a self-healing style grip, and because it's stretchy it can be drawn tight and yet still be adjustable.
