This is an off-shoot to this thread where I was asking about a Cube bike.

But I've been having a change of mind (almost by the hour).

I think I've got it narrowed down to 4 now ;)

First there's the Cube Attempt which I got fitted for in Prologue Cycles nr Richmond. Very helpful staff and the bike was comfortable (on the trainer) with Ultegra/105 components.
This one costs £1050 and I got some good discounts on shoes.computers etc.
Totalling £1200 altogether.

But I didn't really fall in love with the bike, and since this will have to last a good few years I don't want to just get any bike to the sake of it.

Then I thought about the Colnago Primevera. Much prettier bike and although the components aren't as good I know I would smile every time I walked past it.
£1299 ish for this but I would also need to get a computer and shoes on top of that.
There's also the Arte but at £1500+, I would be at the very limit of what I want to spend before even thinking of the extras.

But then (with my increased budget in mind) I saw the Wilier Mortirolo. ;)
Full carbon frame and forks and lot's of very good reviews. This one also comes with the option of getting Campag components (which the Colnago doesn't) albeit at a lower quality.
Mirage groupest come in at around £1200 which gives me room to get a few extras within my £1500 budget and walk out with change. Or I could go up the the Veloce and hope for some good deals on the shoes etc to keep me within budget but I would probably still go over.

I am waiting for a call back from De Ver Cycles in Streatham to see if they have the Colnagos and Wiliers available to view/ride (but they are closed today )

So any opinions on what to buy. I don't mind up-grading components at a later date, so I think I should go for the better frame i.e. one of the Italian ones, rather than trying to convince myself that the Cube "will do".

Also has anyone been to or dealt with De Ver Cycles. Do you know if they have the Wiliers/Colnagos on display?

Thanks

Mmmm, the Campag equipped Wilier. I would probably go for the mid-choice Veloce ;)

Willier with Centaur!
You would have to throw away all yer Liquigas leaflets and get Lampre ones instead!!

Is that another contribution to the GRJRA Fund I hear?

Perhaps I should set-up a paypal account?

I'm glad I didn't buy the Liquigas shorts, jersey, gloves, socks and helmet now. I would look like a right idiot riding around on a Wilier in that lot

redjedi,

Why not get a custom if your gonna shell such an amount of cash

Are you talking about a custom build i.e. choosing my own parts to go on a pre-made frame?

Or a full custom made frame?

Why fret? You're buying carbon, so you have do all this again in 3 years and change your mind, and then it will be frame only, and you'll have much more choice!

personally I'd be wary of carbon especially if we're talking a bike to last here, but that's just my opinion. I certainly can't imagine I'd want a commuter workhorse in carbon. I really think you need to be considering two bikes here:evil: A fast, light steel bike for commuting and a bling bike for social.

Realistically if it's a beast to cover commute and social then, in this price range, I think high end steel would be the way to go.

We just raised dosh for CC, I'll start the ball rolling here, I'm good for a £10 contribution

I think this will be mainly for social weekend rides. I've got the Sirrus sport frame off Cockofgold which should make a good commuter if I can ever get the bottom bracket out. I'm getting some decent wheels off a friend at work and when I can afford it I'll get something a bit better.

But this bike will live mainly on the wall during the week.....ok, the occasional commute when it's a nice day and I want to go for a ride after work.;)
