Hello all!

I am going to take part in my workplace's cycle to work incentive. I am looking at the Cube Peloton and am almost sold. I am however around 18 stone and wonder if this'll cause me problems with spokes, i hope not but if anyone has any advise i would be grateful!

Many thanks

A lot of bike manufacturers don't have any weight limits on their frames, Cannondale, Trek and Focus I know for a fact, but I also know that Felt do, (approx 16 stone IIRC).

However, the components are a separate matter. I had a Focus Cayo Pro a few years ago with DT Swiss R1900 rims, (approx. 24 spokes), and although I'd checked with Focus about the frame the rims stated a max user weigh of 17 stones. Now I'm 6 '5" and reasonably well padded too boot, and 17 stone is a pipe dream for me, but apart from snapping one spoke, (after about 2 years and lots of miles) I never had any other issues TBH.

The usual advice is to get a pair of custom wheels built with 32 or 36 hole hubs. The normal recommendations are Mavic Open Pro rims on 105 or Ultegra hubs. I've never gone down this route myself but suspect I will do one day. My CAAD currently has Mavic Ksyrium SL wheels, these only have 18 and 20 spokes which is really too few my my big @rse, but they are a fantastically strong wheelset. My commuter uses Halo Aerorage which are about as bombproof as you can get for off the peg wheels IME

Thanks SmokeyMoo!

I checked the specs of the wheels and they are 24 spoke stainless steel, plus the frame size choice goes much bigger than i would fit on so I am thinking i'll be fine. Anyhow, in a few months i will be losing pounds like RBS in no time.

You should be fine just don't go bombing through potholes on it.

I did that (i'm 5'10, 16st) and buckled both wheels at the same time. Moron of the week award to moi for not watching where I was going...

R,

To be on the safe side, I would check with your dealer and ask to have a look in a handbook, as reading through my latest Cube handbook, there is a warning not to exceed the "Permissable Total Weight". (It seems to be a generic handbook for road bikes and is not model specific)

It gives a table that includes figures of 115kg for road bikes, which seems fairly low to me.

This weight includes the rider, the bike, clothing, accessories and any extras you may be carrying, such as hydration and tools etc., which will put you in excess of that max figure (if the Peloton has the same limit)

The safety margins in the bike should easily handle your weight, but if something fails prematurely on the bike, it may be a get out for the warranty ?

Whatever you end up riding - Good luck with shedding those lbs :bicycle:

I've got a Peloton - 2009 model. I'm 6'2" and was 18st when I got it (17st now). It's been a great bike for me, never let me down, it's seen me through 1000's of miles - all the steep stuff around here (Bowland, Dales, Lakes) Raid Pyreneen, Mt Ventoux etc. The wheels - Fulcrum 7s have always stayed true despite the fairly low spoke count, although I've recently upgraded to a pair of handbuilts from Paul Hewitt, due to rim wear. Great bike for the money, go for it.

Thanks all, appreciate your replies :-)

I think weight limits are mainly imposed by the wheelset.

taken from the Easton site FAQ:

3. Where can I find rider weight limits for your wheels?
None of our current (2008 and newer) wheels have rider weight limits.

If you picked a Cube with the DT Swiss wheels then it would be different
