Hello

I'm new to road biking and trying to decide whether to buy a 2013 Cube Peloton Pro 2013 in anodized blue/black/white (£699) or a 2014 Cube Peloton Race in red/black/white (£999). My local bike shop has both in stock.

The main differences would appear to be the upgraded Shimano 105 groupset on the Race compared with the Tiagra on the Pro. However, the Pro (2013 model only) has the anodized aluminium finish, which is nice. The Race is also 300 grams lighter and has better wheels. I'll be clipped in with Shimano A530 pedals and Specialized Tahoe shoes. Braking performance is important to me (I'm coming from an MTB background so think Formula Oro disk brakes!).

I like the colour scheme on both but I am happy to hear your opinions!

For an extra £300 do you think the Race is worth it for a first road bike? I probably won't actually be taking part in sportives anytime soon; it's primarily for fitness/leisure. It will be used for 50 mile+ tours around the lanes of Devon, often involving hill climbs.

Thanks but isn't this a carbon bike that has sacrificed other components to keep the cost down? I'd prefer to have 105 groupset than a carbon frame. I also really want a matt finish, not too keen on the gloss.

Think it is identical to the first one on your list but is a carbon frame instead of aluminium for £100 extra.

Fwiw of the two you post I would pay the extra to get the Aksium wheels and 105 or you could buy the cheaper one and upgrade the wheels and tyres .

Of the 3 I would take the journey down the Carbon route as it's a steal at that price....however that wasn't the question.

You've admitted that the Race is the better bike of the two so it comes down to your value of the price difference- from what I can gather you're coming from MTB so do you have road based clothing (for 50mile trips I would avoid baggy MTB shorts etc.) and do you already have some nice looking bottle holders to go on it and a saddle bag etc?
Myself I do have these things so would go for the better bike, but if I was starting out I would get the Pro and spend £300 kitting out myself and the bike which would make for a more pleasant riding experience and I would therefore use it more.

That wheels/tyres set is £175 @ merlin cycles Eddy, so you would them be approaching the £999 of the race & still have lower tier groupset.

I think the 2014 Race is a much better buy, the 2013 Agree you posted is a good bet though at the price, but only if it fits, only available in 56 & 58 flavours though as far as i see.

The benefits of the full 105 group & Mavic Aksium S wheelset would be felt by the OP over the Pro, definitely.

Or get the carbon GTC if it fits. £200 left over would buy some excellent quality jersey & bib shorts + bottle cages & a saddle pack.

If team kit is your thing, you could pick up a 2013 team jersey for under £50, bib shorts around £70 - £80 & 2× Elite Custom Race bottle cages (my favourite & available in a myriad colours & designs) for around £8 each.

A clip on type saddle pack from £20.

Job done.

Absolute no brainer, get the carbon framed bike as posted by Eddy. If you were pondering the same bike but with the Alu frame, then for an extra £100 it's a steal.

If you want to upgrade it then keep the groupset, change the wheels to Campag Zondas and tubes / tyres for £300, then sell the wheel set that come with yours for say £100-£120. If you want to sharpen up the brakes then buy a set of Swissstop Green HP pads for £20, makes a big difference and better than splashing out on new callipers.

All in still less than a grand and you have a close to 8kg flying machine!!

Just wondering @scotthunter - what are your rough height & leg measurements (not a request for a date) , as that will determine if those bikes actually fit you.

For example, I am 6ft 1/2 inch with a 33" leg.

Cubes generally come up a bit smaller for a given frame size than many other brands.

I have been recommended for a size 60 & have tried it but felt it was too stretched so will be trying to get a 58 which is similar in actual sizing to most brands 56's.

My current bike (Sintesi) is a 56 Large so the 58 Cube is bob on for me.

I noticed also that the Carbon GTC has a stated weight of 8.7kg & I know that the Peloton Race is 8.9kg so only 200g in it, but the parts are a cut above, inc the wheels.

I'm the opposite to Ste above, I'm the same height and inside leg as him and found the 58 Cube too cramped and felt better on the 60!!!!
