I'm new to road cycling so treat me gentle.

I've been advised by afew folk I've spoken to that I shoudl join either the CTC or British Cycling, anyone want to give me their opinions on which is best?

I'm not looking to do any racing at, just sportives, friendly rides and a little touring.

Thanks

Ruary

Hi Ruary, if you cast your eye down the threads you will see another thread with almost the same heading as yours where several people contributed ideas and suggestions. Within that thread is also a link to yet another discussion on the same topic.

CTC = included 3rd party liability insurance wherever you ride (except USA and canada) iirc the insurance also covers you for certain events Audax, TT and for commuting (on a bike), they will also fight your corner pretty much from what I have read. Membership also gives you access to loads of information leaflets and route cards around the world etc. No experience of BC.

I have CTC family membership. worth it for the 3rd party insuarance and the cracking deal on bike insurance for all the bikes in the household. Brother in law has BC membership as he rides competetive events . thats as much as i can opine

BC also has a leisure section, so do not regard membership as solely for the lycra, head down cyclists.

IMO, have a good look around each web site, check out the prices, what each provides and then choose the one that you are most in tune with. But personally, I think membership of either is important (essential ?)- the insurance cover alone is worth the annual fee.

If your only after the legal cover + insurance the BC ride option is £24 compared to £37? for the CTC for the same cover.
You do get the magazine + more active lobbying on cycle issues by the CTC .

I joined BC this morning. £24 for the ride membership, which is for commuting and recreational cyclists, who do the occasional sportive. I chose it over CTC because you have to be a BC member to join my local road club.
