Can anyone help with this one?

"Heartless idiot, daft bishop held to be intensely passionate" (6)

The answer has to be 'torrid' as it means 'intensely passionate' and it fits, but I just can't unravel why. I hate putting answers in when I haven't truly unravelled the clue.

Apologies if I don't reply for a bit - I'm currently on retreat so probably (a) shouldn't be doing crosswords and (b) shouldn't be spending time on the internet.

The heartless idiot part gives you the letters IDOT (you lose the central I). I can't account yet for the RR part but I suspect you're correct.

The IDOT is daft, ie mixed up. The RR is held, ie in the middle.
