Hello all

I have just fitted my Crud Racer Mk2 Mud Gaurds onto my Cannondale Six because the last time i tried to fit these the orignal 105 brakes wouldnt let them fit onto my bike , but now ive changed my brakes to Dura Ace this has giving me enough clearance to get these on

But for some reason the back one is still catching a little bit and does anybody have any tips to stop this , ive have the little buffers on the correct place .

Will this damage my tyres or not ? as the wheel is moving fine ?

Image attached and thanks for your help

How much clearance did you have before the guard went on? You need about 5 mm. You can check how much you have (before putting the guards on, and preferably before buying them!) by squeezing a 5 mm allen key in the gaps between the tyres and the brakes, and the rear tyre and the seat tube.

If you have that much clearance, the guards will fit if you adjust them properly. If the clearance is much less than 5 mm you will always be struggling.

Tip 1: Don't overtighten the plastic ties which go over the brakes. If you do, you will distort the shape of the guards and make rubbing more likely. Just tighten them enough to hold the guards in place.

Tip 2: Make sure you follow the instructions for adjusting the stays. You can loosen the nuts holding the guards to the stays and increase or decrease the clearance there. That will affect the clearance elsewhere as the plastic will flex.

Tip 3: If you pull the guard upwards slightly from where the stays join on to it, you will subtly adjust the shape of it. That might do the trick.

Tip 4: Moving where you fix the stays to the forks or seatstays can also affect the shape of the guards. Moving them a couple of mm might be enough.

I think a lot of people give up too quickly on the Roadracers because of the rubbing issue. Assuming you do actually have enough clearance, it is usually just a case of systematically adjusting those 4 things.

Even if any rubbing doesn't damage your tyres, the sound of it will eventually damage your head!

If you are getting rubbing sounds from the start of a ride, just wait until you pick up some mud and grit. I had my Cruds jam up completely because I didn't keep them clean. If you have a lack of clearance to start with, the guards will clog very easily

I'm not sure that a picture would help, but I can't see one anyway!

Thanks for the reply i have more clearance than i did before that's why i refitted them

does everything look normal for the image ive uploaded and ive been moving the bits around and i think that the noise could be coming from those buffers .

Im going to have a little ride out soon along the sea front and try and ajust them as best i can and i can get out with my CC at the weekend because i don't like going out when its wet because i will just end up spraying other members which isnt good at all

Sorry Carl, I was just staring at your bike, what was the question again? ;)

Nice bike - personalised signature on the frame too! I have an old CAAD 5 in red which I'm rather fond of.

It's almost impossible to tell much from the photo to be honest, other than that you seem to have lost the back of the front guard. Did you take it off because of 'toeclip overlap' or snap it off? I get some contact with the front of my shoes so I have to be careful, but it only ever happens if I start zigzagging up steep hills.

I reckon you will be able to tweak the guards so they are quiet most of the time. If you ride over debris like leaves, inevitably some stuff will get picked up by your tyres and rub for a while. I just ride through shallow puddles every now and then to rinse out under the Cruds and that seems to do the trick.

The worst conditions for rubbing noises are like here today in West Yorkshire. It was a very cold night so the gritters were out, but today is dry so the grit hasn't been washed away. If I went for a ride now, I'd be getting lots of grit pick up but there aren't any puddles to ride through!

Thanks Colin i did the personalised signature myself and cost me £3.75 from e-bay and its on both sides

The front mud gaurd snapped , infact that was the rear one on my otherbike and i put my bike upside-down and it snapped off . Im just waiting for my dad to drill me another hole and i can refit it .

Ive not had a problem at the moment with them catching on my size 51 shoes

I went for a ride and the noise stopped and i think its just that little buffer on the side touching the wheel rim/tyre

But im glad its all sorted now and i can get out on my bike with the club runs now and get some training in for the time-trials this season

Oh, I've just thought - the 5th adjustment you can make is to twist the stays sideways slightly to centralise a guard if the pile strip on one side is much closer to the rim than that on the other.
