Are crown races generic?

I've ordered an FSA 45 x 45 headset and I notice that CRC list a couple of split races (Hope and Nukeproof) which would save an awful lot of faffing around with the force fit supplied with the set.

FSA 45x45 uses cartridge bearings, so that crown race will be ideal. Different story if the headset used ball bearings like the FSA Pig.

Cheers, that will save a 12 mile trip to my LBS and having to buy something while I'm there as penance for asking him to bang on the race that I bought online.

That had crossed my mind too, but I wasn't sure if they are hardened. I wouldn't have thought so as the balls don't actually run on them.

However, already ordered the split race. I'm no skinflint...

A 12 mile trip to the LBS to fit a crown race? Why bother?
Just buy a length of this, slip it over your steerer tube and give it a few hard shoves :

I have seen the cack handed way some bike shops fit and remove crown races and seen the damage that they cause. Would far rather do it myself.

The base of the steerer on 1 1/8th forks varies slightly by design.

Some forks have a 28mm sleeve at the bottom - others have a 30mm fitting as presumably the carbon needs additional reinforcement.

Anyway, got to phone CRC first thing Monday as I've mistakenly ordered two headsets instead of one. Prat.
