The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Reported pothole Tuesday on fillthathole - cycled same stretch today - holes patched. Maybe because I pointed out the potential danger - the hole was on a busy A road and avoiding it by swerving into the path of heavy traffic could have been fatal.

All credit to South Gloucestershire for their prompt action.

(It could have been a coincidence, of course).

I'm starting an experiment with fill that hole this weekend. Going to 3 different roads in 3 different london boroughs and i'm going to report every single pot hole. Hopefully that is going to equal 3 roads resurfaced, but i doubt it.

Make sure you blog about your findings.

They can read emails but not tarmac it seems.
Reported a hole, it got filled in good time, but not the one next to it. Reportted that hole, it then got filled.

Madness!

Reported a hole and it was filled within 72 hours

The one 30cm away from it was left untouched

Without having any knowledge of how councils and their workers operate (does anyone ?

) I would not be at all surprised if the reason for adjacent holes being left is because the workies who go out to do the job are not allowed to do anything other than the specific job/hole they have been sent to do. Otherwise they could look at a stretch of road, know that it needs a good resurface, do it - all the other reported holes don't get done and the budget goes out the window.

Often, the workmen are as frustrated as are we, as they see the things that need to be done but are not allowed to do them then and there. Budgets, rules etc etc.

I'm almost certain this is correct. I worked for a local council once and our department created a newsletter and sent it out to relevant people. We had to withdraw it after the first issue since we hadn't requested permission to do it from about 3 or 4 individuals...

I was informed by a local parish councillor that councils often employ sub-contractors to fix the roads and these contractors quote per job. Obviously it is not in their interests to do more work than has been specified and quoted for. That hole 30cms away will require another job number and payment!

If you're coming to Kingston , start with Portland Road ........ Very well used by cyclists, as it connects with the off road cycle lanes and the official blue route from Kingston to Surbiton. The overall surface is that horrid rough tarmac full of large grit and stones, that is before the potholes which seem to be lots of smaller ones, so I don't think they bother cars as much (the larger ones appear to have been patched). The road is pitted in places with the long ruts as well. Not nice on my little Brompton wheels (thank god for padded shorts).
