Solved but might be useful.
My bike developed a creak somewhere in the right side of the chainset.
Instead of checking it methodically, I assumed it was the bottom bracket and replaced it. To be honest that was quite useful and educational, but not strictly necessary.
Of course the creak remained. I had a good look at the Parktool book, and followed their advice. Hail the moustache.
The problem was the shockingly loose screws holding the small chainring - I could almost literally turn the screws by hand. I bought the bike second hand so I guess it was never checked.
Now these screws are tightened to 11Nm, so should be fine for a while - no creak anymore. Forgot to put any threadlocker though.
I really like the Teng-tools small torque wrench I have, such a clear feedback click.
